so i have a leak in my radiator hoses (evidently this is a common problem where the crimps come loose) so it has slowly been draining out... had the low coolant light come on before and i just added coolant to the resivour and it went away for a little bit... well the light came on again.. and i had been driving the truck for a little while so i pulled over it wasent near the 210 range but it was a little above 160.. i started to slowly take the cap off... and it started hissing so i let it sit for a little bit longer and tried it again it started hissing so i let it hiss for a couple seconds and it stopped.. i put fluid in.. and when i started driving the temp stayed below 160.. then rocketed up past 210 where i shut the truck off and pulled over...
got out look and it has shot a bunch of fluid out of the overfill tube. so i let it sit for a few started it.. and it sat right where it should sit at around 190... so i got to the shop did the same thing where it wasn't completely cold.. hissed... let it hiss for a few then same thing filled it. was driving home and the same exact thing happened.. so i dont kno if there is something that im doing wrong or what.. there is no radiator cap but on the resiviour..
anyone ever had it happen or have any advice? the oil dosent look like it has any coolant in it.. and there has been no smoke other then coal coming out... the only other thing i can thing of is possibly a sticky t-stat?
Thanks,
Andy

you have a air pocket some where in the system...its a major PITA to do; with the motor cold pull the upper rad hose at the rad and fill the hose and reconnect, do the same for the upper heater hose at the fire wall. now top off the over flow to full cold and with the cap off the over flow tank start the truck and let run; watch the tank "breath" ( fluid will move up and down as truck is running ) only refill the tank to the cold line as more fluid is needed.
it sounds like you know where and what your main fluid leak is so take the time now and swap out the stupid spring clips for the SS band clamps

how would i go about switching the clamps out?

got me thinking if you are talking about the trans lines for a minute here..had to go out the truck and give a look over....
leak is from the back of the motor at the heater hoses???

the leak is coming out of one of the lines coming out of the rad. it looks like it goes up to the reservoir one of the crimps on the lines is coming loose ive seen a few people with the same problem... its on the bottom side of the motor and rad. ive been told its not worth buying the OEM replacement because it will just have the same problems to bring it and get it re-crimped by a hydraulic shops.

the SS band clamps are the old standard worm gear radiator clamps used up thru the mid 80's from the factory...the spring clips used now suck.
the small line from the rad to the over flow uses the spring clips... the trans lines are crimped and suck from factory and those are what every one is having re-crimped at hydraulic shops...the only crimped rad stuff I am seeing is the heater lines acros the top of the motor front to back....
can you get a pick of what your looking at?? as I may be not seeing something

those are the best i can get for the time being of the actual crimps themselves leaking.. those are the to problem ones i have... the second one actually goes up to the front of the rad..
also if got the rad flushed and new fluid put in do you think that may solve the problem im having with the coolant issue? im going to try doing a new t-stat tomorrow because of how weird it is acting when i drive it... but i might still get the rad flushed because its about time to do that anyways..

Those would be the transmission cooler lines. There are 3 lines, one of mine is leaking as well. Do a search for trans cooler lines or go in the ally section there is a sticky at the top. You can read for days on the different ways to fix em.
I believe Tony Burkhard at http://allseasondieselperformance.com has a kit to fix all three.

thats weird because im loosing coolant and not trans fluid... because of the leaks ive been checking my fluid levels on everything very consistently and my oil and trans fluid never move its just my coolant

Hopefully someone with some more experiance can chime in and shed some light on that.

yup..trans lines win again!!!
as for the coolant leak, how long does it take to get low enough to call for fluid? you may have to take it in for a pressure test...hopefully not a gasket...
and no water in engine oil, correct??

It happens to me about every 6 months or so. I do have a very very slight leak at the lower rad hose drivers side (I think). so I just re-fill with a bit of 50/50 descool water mix. one day I'll gert those proper clamps on...one day.
Trans lines...done long time ago. Still no leakum.!

im going to be picking up a compression tester tomorrow and seeing if thats the problem.. in a week or so when im able to get to the shop i will probly pull those lines and have all of them re crimped with a higher crimp fitting so i dont have to worry about them ever again. thank you for all the help and advice.. and as for water in the oil i dont believe there is or there isent any that i can tell.
