:wtf: What the crap is this foil on the fender next to the airbox? I saw it there a while back but forgot to ask about it. I know on my gasser that the airbox actually fed from the fender right there. Are there any issues besides MORE AIRFLOW if I take it off?
Thanks

I pulled mine off as there have been a few folks who
have had the foil sucked into the box actually blocking air flow.

I removed the air box, swiss cheesed it and also riveted
on a piece of sheet metal over the opening after I removed
the glued on foil.

That idea of riviting the sheet metal to cover the original air inlet is a good idea. I'd never heard of the foil getting sucked in. I have that on my '01; it was a recall item done sometime in '02 or '03. I think it was to reduce/ eliminate water injestion (turbine impingement) into the turbo. And so I never thought that it would happen to mine. Now, however... I'll do that asap. Thanks for the heads up!

So I am guessing that removing the foil and not covering the hole up would not be a good idea. Hmmm......keep water out, let air in......wheels are turning, keep you posted):h

I had the foil sucked into my airbox, others had it happen also. Everyone should check it.

I pulled the foil out after it came loose and didn't replace it. That was at 30K miles and I'm now at 60K. I've also swiss-cheesed the airbox. You can see daylight if you remove the airbox top/filter and look down into the fender area, so yes there is the potential for water from the fender opening, but it seems like you would have to be fording a pretty deep stream for that to happen.

And here I was told the first thing you'd want to do for performance was peel off the foil, to allow cold air to the airbox entry! I did that and will say it was a real ***** to get off- don't know how the air system could ever generate enough vacuum to pull off the stuff that was on my truck!

It was my understanding that the foil is there to reduce noise in full throttle noise testing. Guess it would work as a splash guard as well. Hmmm.

Wow..... I had not heard that one before.

I did not want the possibility of sucking anything in from the
wheel opening, although I think I read of someone fabricating
a air ram to the air box.
