: Which Programmer for Cummins??
betterdays469 07-08-2005, 01:14 AM I just bought an '05 dodge 2500 4x4 with the cummins 600 in it. I'm looking to buy a programmer for it, but am not sure what the best one out there is, since there are so many these days. I've looked into the Bully Dog, Edge, and Banks.. there's also predator, hypertech..I dunno.. I figure there's some people out there that have these in their trucks, or know someone who has, and can help me out a bit. Looking for something with the most safe horsepower gain, different level settings, and hopefully can also change things like tire and wheel size and other things. Lemme know some opinions. I will probably also do the exhaust and air intake, so if anyone has any suggestions on that, a good combo of what kinds, that'd be great!! Thanks guys :-)
mattymac 07-08-2005, 01:25 AM If you want a downloader go with Bullydogs.
If you want to run a chip, go with either the TST PMCR or the Edge Juice.
For safe HP gains just get gauges. The Juice sounds like what you need, lots of safety features and functions plus built in digital gauges and easy HP changes.
For the exhaust just take your truck to a good muffler shop and have them put in a good flow through muffler, Its way cheaper and its as good as any exhaust kit becaue your stock piping is all 4". Just get rid of your restrictive muffler.
betterdays469 07-08-2005, 11:56 AM I was reading about the bullydogs, and it has max horsepower gain of 136, which is pretty damn good, the Edge goes up to 100hp, but has the 5 settings, Bullydogs only has 3. The bullydogs has the Outlook monitor that you can get also, and i think it does pretty much the same as the Edge Attitude monitor, with digital guages. I've read about both, and i think this is correct, but not 100%. Out of the two of them, even though Bullydogs says more horsepower, what would you,(or anyone) recommend over the other one? Also, can either of these be taken out and the truck be put back to stock settings? I'm not sure the difference between a "chip", and a 'downloader', i thought both did about the same thing..haha
mattymac 07-09-2005, 01:53 PM The Bullydog (BDDL) is a downloader, which means you replace some of the info in the ECM of the truck, you can only run one program at a time. So to change HP you need to do a quick reflash of the ECM.
With a chip it plugs into sensors or wiring that usually get looped through the chip and gives the ECM false or fooled readings which can manipulate the functions of the ecm or the chip can do its own things to the engine and its parts.
I havent used the BDDL, but I know on the higher HP programs it has a ton of low end. The TST PMCR is a strong but slightly less responsive chip than the Edge Juice but will make more power at 150+ HP. The Attitude monitor is really cool with the Juice, lots of safety and functions.
betterdays469 07-09-2005, 02:13 PM well thanx for your information... i guess my decision is between the bullydog and the edge juice. I think they monitor that you can get with the bullydog does just about the same functions as the attitude monitor with the edge juice...... so maybe bullydog is the way to go with the more horsepower. They got a new bullydog program out, 'crazy larry', with the 3rd horsepower rating at 200+!! but it says you need to do other changes to the truck to hit a safe 200hp gain. I'm not tryin to break my truck, so i figure 100 or so horsepower is pretty good for now.. the bullydog is 139 i think, so i might go that route... If anyone has any more opinions or info, feel free to post!! thanx again :-)
I like the TST PowerMaxCR. You can get one with built in EGT and Boost gauges. It has seperate levels for hp and tq... up to 9/9.
TST is an excellent company that has proven it's technology to be as good or better than advertised. They claim 195 hp on 9/9. I believe it. I dynoed 425 on 5/5. That's about 150 hp gain at the rear wheels. Box only. You can't run it set on 9/9 to it's fullest without a tranny and turbo upgrade though. On a stock truck it works great in the 5/5, 7/7 range and if you upgrade the truck you already have the box to jack up the power.
It also has adjustable egt defueling capability and can be turned up or down on the fly.
It's not a fuel pressure box. I do not like pressure boxes on the Bosch Common Rail system. Check out my signature for details.
