: Newbie question: fuel filter??
B-Rad502 07-07-2005, 11:58 PM I was told to change the fuel filter more often than the book says. Where is that thing located?? Is the dealer filter fine for a stock truck or do I need to upgrade?
I'm also going to change the secondary spin-on tranny filter. I found that one. My truck just turned 8k miles. Wanted to get these done before our big trip to Yellowstone pulling our trailer next week!
Thanks for any help!:ro)

You might also want to consider an additional fuel filter located either pre or post OEM. I've personally chosen the "pre" OEM route with a "Nicktane" filter using a 2 micron CAT 1r-0749 filter. Not too dificult to install.
See web site www.nicktane.com (http://www.nicktane.com) for more details.

B-Rad502 07-09-2005, 12:13 AM Damn, what a pain in the a$$! Not the actual filter change, but getting my damn hands in there to do it. The air cond. line was not in the way but everything else was. I had my wife reach in there to unplug the elctrical stuff before we took the filter out. Now it's done and I'll do it again in 5000 miles. :D
briano 07-09-2005, 12:28 AM LOL...glad you got it. Yeah, its a pretty tight area to work in and some of us have big hands or have to contort our arms 3 different ways to get it done.. LOL

DSTRBD 07-09-2005, 12:03 PM B-RAD- Did you pull off the fender liner? If not, it is much easier to pull it out to get access to the filter and plug.

Exactly what I did - took me 10 min. max to remove the fender liner. EASY access to that filter afterwards. Removed without any tools, changed, primed, some air out (screw). Ready to go in 1/2 hour - much easier than my old Landcruiser! :ro)
Turbotug 07-09-2005, 01:25 PM I can usualy change mine w/o removing the fender liner. I just loosen the filter and let it rest on the frame rail, then slide it out the hole by the shock mount. Two tools: filter wrench and WIF wench(thanks Eric:ro) )! Maybe the smaller LB7 filter allows that? Five minutes including prime. Now changing the Cat filer is a whole different story:rolleyes: .
Towsaboat 07-10-2005, 03:32 AM Changed mine last week and was amazed at how easy it actually was. Didn't have to move the Air Conditioning line nor remove a fender liner. Toughest part was finding a filter wrench to fit the filter, then the electical line got caught in the exhaust manifold shield.
Guess I've got small hands:rolleyes:
Mr. D 07-10-2005, 07:26 AM Just askin! Why do you guys feel that filters have to be changed so often? I've owned three diesel trucks since 1994 and put lots of mileage on them! I ran fuel filters 20k miles and more and saw absolutely no change in performance when I did change them! Granted if you get dirty fuel somewhere you better have filters with you because you could be in trouble in a hurry!

Because of all the injector failures and to decrease on change intervals. Didn't you ever cut open your fuel filters at 20K to see what they look like?
Oh, since this subject has been beat to death try a search next time instead of asking stupid newbie questions.
