: lly surge at idle in/out gear
louddmax 05-18-2010, 10:21 PM my 04 lly just turned 200xxx and I noticed a surge in idle for a while, now it has really become noticable in gear with a few hundred rpm fluctuation in the tach.does this sound like the fuel pressure regulator or what? seem to still run fine and pull hard just kinda scares a guy at the lights thinkin it may die.
skidooracer_99 05-18-2010, 11:13 PM Hey good to see another alberta guy on here. and yup my 04.5 lly did that at around 90,000kms only. it was the fuel pressure regularor. it was still covered under warranty for me then but thats definately what stopped it completely. they changed the egr first under warranty but that didnt fix a thing. sounds exactly like what mine was doing.. there was no surge in park, just while in gear. most noticeable with my foot on the brake waiting at a red light. if i didnt press harder than normal the surge would want to jerk the truck forwards. and it did it alot in a parking lot while riding the break into a stall, got kinda scary while inching up to a parked car and it would wanna surge ahead. didnt notice a thing at driving speeds. i let mine go for a while too but it slowly got worse till i couldnt stand it anymore. hope that helps ya out
roy67ss 05-18-2010, 11:25 PM Another Alberta guy here, where you guys at?
My truck is doing the same thing. I just got a new FPR and plan on installing it next week. I hope it fixes the problem.
skleppy 05-18-2010, 11:26 PM Once it gets real bad it will do it in gear or in park and whenever it wants to. Mine would surge 500 rpm in traffic sometimes. If I stopped after coming off the highway in the city I'd have to put it in neutral at light so I wouldn't chance hitting the car in front of me.

skidooracer_99 05-19-2010, 10:52 PM I'm close to the Edmonton area. actually in Vegreville.
roy67ss 05-19-2010, 11:48 PM Gillett Diesel Service is where I got mine. It was $188.75 USD including shipping. It is a Bosch unit made in Germany. Pretty reasonable in my mind.
cracker749 05-23-2010, 06:47 PM Definitely sounds like the FPR. Mine started out in gear and as it got worse it would do it whenever as well. I don't miss that feeling of sitting in traffic and thinking I was going to rear end someone!
azduramax04 05-23-2010, 07:54 PM Would shimming it fix the problem?
231samuel 05-23-2010, 08:53 PM you might want to change the fuel filter as well, that fixed mine for a while when i was having the same symptoms. or you could just buy the PPE Race Valve that is what i was told would also fix the problem.
lmm2008Dmax 05-25-2010, 01:54 PM Hey guys, I am having the same problem with my 04.5 lly! How much am I looking at to replace the damn thing?? I might just buy one off one of these sites for alot cheaper than at the dealer. But I don't have the first clue how to put it in! Im just under the 150,000 km mark on it. So warranty doesn't cover it im guessing?? Thanks for all the help! And I'm located in Dawson Creek northern B.C. Good to see a few other guys on here from northern Canada! Cheers! Again thanks for all the help, much appreciated!
buckshot1224 05-25-2010, 02:32 PM Mine did this and it was #3 injector.
Hutch Delux 05-25-2010, 07:09 PM i dont think shimming it would fix the problem, isnt the shim for the release valve?
RTSMAX 05-28-2010, 09:12 PM Mines been surging for well over a year now. Finally decided to replace the FPR. I found one for $153, OEM BOSCH unit, P/N-GM0928400653. I thought that was a good price!
double d 1 05-31-2010, 12:24 PM i have 233,000 miles on mine. i put 8 ounces of power service per full tank in mine and it stopped surging. about 10 dollars at walmart. it treats 240 gallons i think.

I've been running PS for 40,000 mi. and even 32 oz. won't help it now! It did at first though. I'm going to replace the FPR and shim the FPRV while I'm in there.
