So my truck has been smoking a white/gray color smoke as of a month or 2 ago. Everytime I start it up I get a nice poof of smoke, and just sitting at idle I can see it continue to output a little bit of white/grey smoke. If I lay into the throttle while driving it really pushes out some white/grey smoke when it never used to in the 2.5 years ive owned the truck. A family member was driving behind me one day who is a coast guard ship mechanic and he immediatly said to me when we got to our destination "your injectors need to be replaced". So I was convinced that they needed to be. I seem to have a little less power especially when towing than I used to, and gas mileage seems to have been a little less than it used to be. I thought I had all the symptoms but I took it to the dealer this morning and they just called back and said it is just fine. They tested the injectors they say, and said they are fine and maybe I need to replace my fuel filter or air filter because they admitted that the engine isnt running as smooth as it should. (replaced fuel filter in the fall) Im mad cuz I am about to loose out on the extended service thing cuz soon the truck will be out of the 7yr/200,000 mile range.

Anyone have any insight? Did this dealer suck at testing the injectors? What is causing the excessive white/grey smoke if it isnt the injectors?

They are wrong. It has to be the injectors.

If you are having white smoke at idle, after the truck is warm, and when you take off after idling for a while it blows out a big cloud of white smoke then it is your injectors!

Now the injectors could be passing all the tests the dealer ran, but still be leaking a little fuel causing the smoke.

Can you post up what the injector balance rates are after it is at running temp idling in park?

They claim that there is no fuel in the oil.

And how would I get the balance rates? is that a test I can ask them to give me a print out of?

Should I try another dealer, or if I go to anothr dealer are they going to look up that another dealer just tested it and said it was ok and not want to look at my truck?

Ask them what tests they did and get a copy of all the results!

Fuel in the oil is not the only way to test for bad injectors, and it only happens half the time the injectors fail.

You want a copy of the balance rates, and fuel rail pressure when they command it to 60 MPA and see what it is actually making.

The injectors could be causing the smoke but if the fuel rail pressure meets the specs they cannot cover them under the special policy.

My dealer tested my injectors and told me which 2 of them were leaking fuel and causing the white smoke. But my fuel rail pressure was not bad enough for them to cover the costs.

Im going to pick it up during lunch break and I will ask them for this. Thanks for the suggestions, I was afraid nobody would respond to another injector thread in this section haha.

No problem!

Let me know what the test results were!

if the truck passed the 160mpa pressure test, then the dealers hands are tied as far as the special policy goes.....the injectors are bad i think, but not covered due to the specific failure.

i'd try another dealer before giving up...if you can find a tech who wants the job,he can make it happen.

If you can find a Dealer that wants the work, the Tech will find a way for the injectors to fail the test.

I must replace the fuel injectors in my truck. It is a 2002 and therefore older than 7 years now. I had the major 100,000 mile service done before the end of 2009 at a dealership and was having SES light problems them. I guess I'll have to get a list of all the tests. They sure did not mention this problem.

It seems like this problem should be covered under a recall not a special notice - it limits Chevy's liability too much.

I drove my truck for 30k miles with smoke at idle, it finally got so bad I had to get them done. They also passed the test. Balance and return rates were ok.

I don't want to sound like a smart ass,but it said right on there that the air filter was plugged and that the restriction gauge was in the red.If that filter is that plugged,it could be part of your problem. Also you said you replaced the fuel filter last fall.Depending on the mileage it might need a new one of those too. When I was buying fuel in town,I was lucky to get 7500miles out of a filter.
I'm not sticking up for the dealer, but you have to check out the simple stuff first. You might get lucky.

And by all means get a second opinion if you think they are trying to hose you.

Well I do plan on replacing the air filter and I'll probably replace the fuel filter on my next oil change(very soon) to see if it will fix anything before I take the next step in figuring out this problem.

Same here. Drove with about the same miles to the point of embarrassing smoke and like you they also passed all tests.

Replaced the injectors and all is fine.

Like sfcjones and myself, there are few of us on the forum who had only terrible smoke at idle but no other symptoms. We replaced the injectors and problems solved.

I would do it asap for that little sensor to say your air filter is plugged it has to be really really dirty and that could cause part of the issue. As far as the fuel filter I'd change it too I was just having issues with boost and rail pressure even though I changed my fuel filter less than 3,000 miles ago. Guess what changed it and problem solved cut open the filter and it looked like someone filled it with black dirt. Run a double dose of stanadyne performance formula through it a few times as well and see if that helps.

I just had mine tested after 60K miles, I was blowing white smoke on idle but absolutely no hard starting or rough running. I took the truck to Acapulco & back in spring & my mileage dropped 1 MPH coming back, over going down. Hardly noticeable.

If it had passed my strategy was going to be to use it as my daily drive,r til close to the warranty expiry then re-test.

They said they will replace all 8 injectors, needed or not which is contrary to what some dealers seem to be telling some posters here. Mertin Chev in Chilliwack, BC, Canada. I took it there even though I live in Abbotsford, 30 miles away. I took it to the dealer in Abbotsford last December with a problem of the seat heaters coming on by themselves. They supposedly fixed it, 3 weeks later in Mexico it started to happen again. I took it to O'Reilly's in Tucson (a good dealer, BTW). They said there was a service bulletin on it a software update the dealer at home should have known about.
