I have a question about the transmission TCM and how it "learns" to best shift in regards to your engine and the power setting from your programmer.

How does the transmission learn when a programmer that is adjustable on the fly is being used and adjusted all of the time? And will this lead to premature stock transmission failure as opposed to a programmer that is set at a certain power level and left alone?

The loads that I have been towing through the mountains have gotten heavier and I’m having troubles with my EGT temps getting too high with the PPE Standard on level 2. But I would hate to have to re-program my truck every time I had to tow over the pass. So I’m looking into other programmers such as the Edge, but was curious about the tranny and TAPS.

Thanks for your input. This web site is an amazing wealth of information.

I have a Banks six gun which I can switch on the fly. The manual states to take it easy while gradually increasing power over 50 or so shifts. The Allison TCM will learn the new power and adapt.

The Allison learns by looking at the shift after it happened. If it did everything it was supposed to do then no adjustment is made, if the shift was improper then and adjustment is made and stored in the TCM for the next time that shift occurs. The learned values are stores into the TAP and TAV cells. By resetting the TAP and TAV cells your going back to what the factory had put in place.
