: 6.5 diesel resistor questions
mach1muscle 07-07-2005, 11:56 AM Hello, I'm new to diesel engines but learning quick. I just put a new engine in my 94 GMC crewcab 3500 4x4. But I didn't replace the old worn out IP. I'm getting piles of blue smoke on the first start of the day. After that the truck runs good and doesn't smoke. I have a buddy with a good used pump that is missing its resistor. He knows the pump to be a good worker and I want to use it in my new engine. We are wondering what resistor to use with it? I understand that the #9 supplies the most fuel? Therefore the most power? Is there any danger in putting the wrong resistor in? I also need to change the PROM to run this pump as my truck is the 94 1 ton with the oddball style pump. The PROM is only a little over $100, far cheaper than the $1700 pump would be from GM. Thanks.
94blazer6.5 07-07-2005, 12:10 PM I'm running the #9 with no problem to date. I've been told anything higher then a #9 will set SES lights.
megafysh1 07-07-2005, 12:23 PM Does the fuel controller from out west work in place of changing resistors, does it put a strain on the system??
quantum mechanic 07-07-2005, 12:46 PM Out west? The only fuel controller I'm aware of is A-1, and I'd stay away from his garbage.
I think the pump would work fine with whatever resistor and even no resistor.

Did you notice a difference when you changed to this resister? Mine is still stock and was wondering if its really worth changing the resister or not. I don't want to just be changing it to use more fuel without an added benefit.
I realize (however sadly) that I probably won't be able to pop wheelies or anything but just wondering if there is really a difference or not.
quantum mechanic 07-07-2005, 02:50 PM 3 cc's is the maximun increase from #1 to #9 resisters. Bumping the optical will increase it by up to 5.5 mm/stroke. you'd go from 61.5mm/stroke to near 69.5 mm/stroke wot if you did both.
94blazer6.5 07-07-2005, 03:39 PM Well here's the funny thing, I had the IP replaced while still under warrenty in 96'(since put a new IP and PMD with #9 about 4,000miles ago) so I went to look at what resister was in the old PMD and it was a #9, so no I didn't notice a difference. Sorry
Kennedy 07-07-2005, 04:30 PM Try some glow plugs to help the blue smoke. The resistor is not going to do anything for you.
mach1muscle 07-07-2005, 05:26 PM All the glow plugs have checked out fine. I know the resistor is not causing the blue smoke but I want to change the pump and the pump I will be using is missing its resistor, therefore the question.
94blazer6.5 07-07-2005, 05:47 PM As far as popping wheelies maybe try going really fast over a couple of car ramps, but I guess then you really be jumping your truck and not doing wheels. I don't know I'll have to think about that one. LOL When you get time go by the Welcome new forum member so you can update your signature with stuff about your truck, so we will know what you've done or not done. Helps getting answers with out alot of guessing. Welcome and have fun.
bowtie 07-07-2005, 05:47 PM I' double check the Glow Plug System then if I was sure the glow plugs were good. You Can use your old resistor with the replacement pump I believe. I'd swap the Pump and PROM and see how that runs if glows everything is ok.
guybb3 07-08-2005, 05:35 AM QM and JK are right about not feeling a difference with the #9. Doesn't the PCM difault to #5 when the resistor is missing? If you guys keep mentioning wheelies I will be getting a ticket later (see signature)
Jperry 07-08-2005, 08:06 AM I just think pulling up to a Ferd or Dodge and popping a wheelie in a crew cab dually is bound to get some response. LOL Maybe not the desired response(Ticket) but would like to see the look on the guys face. LOL
94blazer6.5 07-08-2005, 09:27 AM WHEELIE, WHEELIE, WHEELIE!!!! Oh get someone to make make a vid when you do it so we can all see it LOL. Sorry about getting off topic, but I like what QM said #9 with the bump will get you even more fuel. At least that what I'm going for.

I have one but don't know how to post it:confused:
