here is the question .- when doing a brake stand it seems i go through 3rd gear burning out through all 3 gears . am i better off putting the truck in 1st or 2nd ? i know it is not good for the tranny . i also have 38.5 inch tires . and a stock tranny . is it better to have the tow haul mode selected to lock the torque converter ?

Correct forum? Normally in drag racing we tryto get our trucks too hook up;) :p:

If you want to clean off your tires at the strip drive around the water box, back into it and place yourself on the edge of the water dry spot, get em spinning and roll of the wetness/throttle. You shouldnt smoke your tires although if you get it to the point were you just see white thats fine.

Leave it outa TH and leave it in D......unless you are trying to do a smoke show and I would probably leave the OD locked out. Let it go through the gears at mid throttle and once you hit 4(or 3 if you prefer) wood it and just keep it off the limiter, let off the brake and see how far you can leave strips :D

this has nothing to do with drag racing this is for show and brake stands on the street . i origonally posted in the lly forum but it was moved

This really isnt a LLY specific Q. Thats more to deal with the LLY motor in general. We dont really have a general comp forum so this is probably the best place for it. :)

The above answer your question?

Also remember not to lift off the trottle real quick if possible to try and kep the turbo bark to a min.

does it answere the question - sort of . let me put it this way . for a smoke show and burn out competition what is the least harmmful on the tranny ? 1 leaving it in drive . 2 puting it in 2nd or 3rd . and should i have it in tow haul . thanks

I'm no tranny expert, but I think there is more pressure availible to hold clutches with T/H off. Then your converter is taking a bigger hit. T/H on and your converter is locked but the clutches will slip easier. Experts, please chime in.

I would leve the converter unlocked.

You could leave her in 5th and let her shift through the gears at 1/2 throttle or so and then lay into it, the more tirespeed the more smoke. Dont bounce off the rev limiter, hold her at 3k or so by rolling outa the throttle and keep it there by throttle position. At higher speed the converter is going to lock on its own regardless of th or not.

I'm far from an expert;)

Glad you got an answer.

Phil you should have no problems with burning them up with your traction problems.
Should've laid down a good one at Indy, but were to worried about the amount of tread left.
& How do you have traction problems with the bars.
Is that why your only running a 11.95 with NO2?

Why wouldn't you want the converter locked?

I've done all of my burners in T/H.

I thought there was MORE line pressure in T/H as well as delayed shifting as that is what is needed when towing more weight to keep the tranny from frying (within reason).

As to the original poster. You asked what would be best on the tranny (to T/H or not to T/H), I would say T/H as it is designed to handle added stress and weight of towing. Brake stands are very tough on transmissions in general (even beefed ones), especially the converter. I would say T/H is your safest bet, but you may want to PM Mike L or DmaxAliTech and get their input.....as they know more about the Allison than I do.

Not much to do with line pressures but IMO its easier on stuff to light em up with the converter unlocked. When doing a small burnout and rolling out of it with the converter locked sometimes I will get a upshift bog and a downshift. Just sitting still it probably dosnt matter but you may run into what the pulling guys do I suppose with killing the motor if your not carefull how you stop??? Maybe???

Traction limited yes in general. Indy I didnt run better becasue I had maybe a pass and a 1/2 worth of spray. First pass I didnt purge well enough since I didnt want to waste spray and had a pisspoor 60' becasue of that. Second pass I pretty much ran outa juice. ran 12.20's IIRC on spray. Dont know what I 60' at indy becasue only one of my fuel passes recorded 60'. Think I ran a 12.74 on fule with a mid-high 1.7x

I was talking about the burnout strip next to Amerihost, Im just messing with you.
Atleast you did one, compared to Daryl who chickened out.

I do most of my burnouts with T/H on and truck in second gear. I can leave about 150ft of posi by wooding it when it hits second and letting off the brake. That is with my 285's. Third gear fish tails too much for me. It will go further, but sometimes it downshifts once you get going and if your fishtailing it when that happens it gets a bit hairy. My back tires are almost bald with 8000 miles on them. I think I got my burnouts down pat!

I didnt see your truck out there:flipa: ):h That wasnt a burn out, I just broght her on boost and let off the brake and wooded it. I've only done a legitimate brake torque once, I let her get into 3rd or so before I let off the brake and it put down some strips....I pussed out midway through 5th gear.....going a bit too fast for my liking and I rolled outa her.

You weren't there Fri. night, not that you missed much. I didn't feel to comfortable with that Ferd sitting there with popped tire & with my luck I would be doing one while the cops showed up.
1000 miles from home is not a good place to find a weak link in your truck.

I tried to do a brakestand the other night. It wouldn't burn out. I let off the brake and only left about 10-15 feet of rubber. My truck is all stock. Is this normal to not be able to burn out. BTW it is a posi rear.

bobo

I could leave a 100ft posi with everything stock no problem. When I put my 285's on the stock truck it would hardly do a burnout. Then I added the Predator. That did the trick. There is a guy on these forums that had a d-max and switched to a -:t Dodge. Rumor has it that his new big bad-:t Dodge truck has 400 something rwhp and he can't do a burnout:confuzeld . Don't feel bad if you can't get a good one in your stock truck. At least it is still a d-max and you know it will be able to!!! :grd:

You know why the dodge guys like truck pulling? Because that is the only place they can spin their tires...ON DIRT!!

I can't view it but since it has IRP in the title, I assume it was the burnout contest.

If so they WATERED the area so they could get their tires spinning ):h

It wasn't a contest, it was just a clip of a guy doing a burnout down the street and flipped a U turn and continued burning out until he decided to let off the skinny pedal.:grd:

when doing a burnout is it hard on rear brakes or do the rears not grab?

bobo
08-26-2005, 01:34 PM
It is hard on the brakes. I don't have to hold the brakes for long. Once the turbo spools up, I let off. Once I let off the brakes, it shifts into second. It will shift to third soon after if you hold the brakes a bit longer while the boost builds. I like doing second gear burnouts the best. It is easier to control. Third and fourth gear gets kinda hairy when your going 45mph and spinning the tires like mad. Getting a 7000# $40,000 truck going sideways at 45mph is not on my to do list, but I had to try it once!!
