: My other converter was better...

Just a follow up to my post in the other thread as it was locked before I got to answer any questions. The converter that I liked best was Joe's modified stator unit. It took a couple of tries to get it there, but I liked this one the best. The latest had the tightened pump clearance/straighter fins and while it takes off good, once the RPMs come up and the turbo gets going, it just doesn't pull like the mod stator unit.

Second best converter was Clint's early unit where he too was opening up the stator some. The ATS full blown trans/converter/copilot will come next when time allows.

To quote Eric from the other thread:

Yea, no wonder I dont spend as much time here as I used too...http://dieselplace.com/forum/images/smilies/blahblah.gif

It would be nice if we could somehow quantify these SOTP converter judgments with numbers. Until then it's all subjective and just personal preference.

It seems lots of people spend more time elsewhere.

To test low end torque multiplication in the truck is pretty simple. Remove all power adders then just lightly step on the pedal say 0 - 20%. Feel how the truck moves. If it feels like your being pushed down the road or does it feel like you are being pulled down the road. Looking at the nose of the hood also help, a puller will give the front of the hood a slight raise when starting off. Then reinstall all the power adders and check how much RPM drop there is under power when the TCC locks in fourth or fifth gears. Now change the converter and repeat the tests. If it feels like one pulls and one pushes the puller has better torque multiplication. The one with less RPM drop under power when locking has better hydraulic coupling. I know which one will win!

Dipper,

How do we quantify this?
:help2:

On Edit: Never mind, I promised myself I would stay out of these types of discussions.

Interesting that the Stator is stock in most of the convertors out there.

DTT's is not a modified unit. It is purpose built.

Once in lockup all bets are off, but I really liked the fluid coupling of the Beta Unit I had to play around with.

Wouldn't it be a great thing to have the Re$ources to try every iteration?

Convertor dynos are one thing.. real life is another.
