So im racing my buddies cummins on level 5 of my ppe standard xcelerator, after i beat him the road starts coming to a bend so i nearly slam on my brakes not quite then boom! i look at my gear selector and it has gear 2 selected, i seriously cant recall me gearing down but what ever i did was enought to break the yoke at the transfer case sending my entire drive shaft across two lanes, thank god it was 2:30 in the morning with no cars on the road. The shop by my house said i cracked my transfer case and that i need a new one, hes saying that when that happens more than likely my tranny is blown but it would take the same amount of labor to put a new one in as it would take to check it out. My concern is that they put on new U-joints on my truck less than 2 weeks ago, he says that has nothing to do with the fact that the driveshaft broke off taking half the yoke with it. I think hes trying to cover his butt. My question is that would me going about 80mph then having my yoke break off cause my transfer case to spin at a higher than normal speed causing eveything to get torn apart including my tranny? Could i blame this somehow on a bad installation of my U-joints on thier part. If i can do that, im sure i can get my insurance to cover the costs as they did for my buddies truck.. Any input / suggestion would help rather than paying this shop $5000 for a used tranny and transfer case installed.

Post some pictures of the broken yoke. Did the yoke break or was it the u joint that failed? I doubt there are any problems with the tranny, but without pictures, it is hard to say. If just the rear part of the transfer case is cracked, just replace the casing. About 300.00

There is probably no way to prove it, BUT i would bet a cool million dollars on the fact that the snap rings were not seated properly when the U-joints were changed. My family operates a driveline shop and i have been building and repairing driveshafts for close to ten years, so ive mopped up after a few other shops handy work. The only reason that yoke would have broke is because the U-Joint was loose. The only way a new joint would be loose is the snap ring was not properly seated. This Allowed the cap to wiggle out over time and when it finally wiggled out the U-joint picked up a little momemtum and snapped that slip yoke.
From the picture it looks like your T-case is fine and the tail housing of the tranny is cracked. You probably have zero internal issues with your tranny or transfer case, unless you ran the truck a long time with it low on fluid.
Ide say the shop owes you a tranny, but good luck with that, hes obviously trying to sell you stuff you dont need instead of covering his tracks and hooking you up.

just looks like you need a new yoke and trans extension housing oh and probably a driveshaft to. Suncoast sells a billet Extension housing and a t-case brace to prevent that. But to me sounds like Ur guy is trying to give you the shaft

yea my transfer case ripped off completely from my tranny. the mechanic said my transfer case locked up which stopped the driveshasft on one end while the other end of the driveshaft connected to the rear differential kept wanting to turn causing the driveshaft to break off. So my other mechanic is doing the job for 1500 less

I'd check the trans tail shaft for any run out; probably none there, just would rather know than have to tear it all apart again to fix it right the second time....20 mins top to check, can even be done with the trans in the truck....
