Hello,

I am looking to hook up an MP3 player to my in dash cd player.

I have an 05' Silverado With just the Single CD w/ XM player in the dash.

I have looked at the IPOD2CAR and the AUX2CAR Auxillary Input Adaptors and they seem to say that for 03'-05' GM vehicles you will not be able to use the XM tuner after you install these products.

I am looking for the exact same kind of product that will allow me to hook up an MP3 player (and hopefully use steering wheel controls on it and charge the player also, just like the IPOD2CAR does), but still keep the use of the XM tuner.

Is there another product out there? Or another solution to this problem?

Please help, I need specific's so I get the right one for my particular truck.

I just talked to Jason yesterday about a ipod connector (same for mp3 probabbly) and he said that you will loose your xm with the currently available connectors.

He said there is a new connector coming out in a couple of weeks or so that will allow you to keep your XM and use the ipod or mp3.

I'll wait till the new one comes out

Do you happen to know if it has all the extra features also? Charges the IPOD? Allows you to control from the radio and steering wheel controls? Turns off the IPOD when not in use?

That is pretty much what I am looking for.

Unless there is another way to wire in a switch or something with the current ones that will allow you to switch back and forth between XM and IPOD.

Thanks for the feedback guys.

Actually you can set up the ipod-2-car two different ways. See the back of the head unit has ONE aux. input. The way GM can get (up to) three aux devices to work together (DVD, XM, Denali/Escalade style extrernal CD changer) is by switching each one on and off via the Class II data bus. So when you press the button on the head unit for XM, it tells the external CD changer and DVD player (if equipped) to shut off and the XM to turn on. Its pretty clever. You can set the ipod-2-car to either act as the CD changer OR the XM reciever on the Class II data bus. There are dip switches on the ipod-2-car and you flick them one way and the radio thinks the ipod is the XM box, flip them the other way and the radio thinks the ipod is the external CD changer. If you set it to act as the CD changer (which you probably dont have...only the Escalades and Denali's do) then it should work fine with the XM unit. I installed an ipod-2-car in my dad's 2003 Tahoe and it works perfectly. Charges it, and the steering wheel controls control the ipod perfectly. Now in 2003, XM was a fairly rare option so his car doesnt have it. So I cant completely confirm that it works with XM if you set it to act as the CD changer. (it obviously wont work at all if you have XM and it is set to act as the XM box...there would be a conflict) BUT I installed the Escalade nav and Escalade CD changer in his Tahoe and with the ipod-2-car set as "act as XM" mode, it works fine with the CD changer. No conflicts. I dont see why it wouldnt work the other way around. I did find however, that when I used the CD changer, the audio was quieter...so the ipod-2-car is maybe doing SOMETHING funny..but I simply added a switch inline with the ipod-2-car's power wire and now it works perfectly. When my dad wants the CD changer, he flicks the switch to turn off the ipod-2-car and then presses the "CDX" button on the nav unit. Now the CDX audio is not quiet. WHen he wants to switch back to the ipod, he flicks the switch ON, then presses the "band" button on the nav unit to switch to "XM" (remember I have it set to act as the XM box because he doesnt have XM). Works perfectly!! So thats all thats needed to make it work...just a little switch inline with the power wire. Now Escalade and Denali people who have XM as well...that would require more work. Because you would need to somehow switch off the XM and CDX power before the ipod-2-car would work properly. I wish it could act as the RSE (dvd) player!!!! That would be perfect because its the one aux. device I dont have in my truck (I added an Escalade nav and CD changer so 2 of the 3 "aux device slots" are occupied-one for XM and one for the CDX)...
Hope that helps...anything is possible!!:D

From what Jason was saying the new connector should do the same as the old ones, charge and steering wheel control but it will work with xm and cdx.

Call him tomm for the details as I didnt get all of them.

well if it works with the CDX and XM, sign me up!!!!!!! Theres another adapter out there made by Metra that actually shows title and artist info from the ipod on the nav/radio screen. However it stupidly locks out control from the ipod... Meaning you can ONLY control it from the radio or SWC's. This could be a pain if you want to skip ahead 50 songs. At first this sounded cool because of the title/artist text feature, but after I thought about it...its really not that important to me. Id rather just have an adapter that works with XM, the CDX, and Steering Wheel Controls.

I sent an email over to jpcustoms.com with my questions about this, they came back with one solution that works right now:

"If you want to run the iPOD adapter and keep your XM tuner, then you’ll need the following:
AAI-GM12
IPOD2CAR
AB-GM12 – vehicle specific harness
Running both adapters will allow you to keep your factory XM and run the iPOD adapter."

I sent another email back to ask Jason about the "new" adaptor diesel dragon was talking about, and asked for a price and a release date. I will post up that information as soon as I get it.

So it looks like there is at least 1 way to do it right now even if the new adaptor turns out to be a flop!

Thanks for the responses everyone.

So if there is no 6 disc changer, will it work as is--without affecting XM function? Like the head unit can be made to think the IPOD is the 6 disc changer?

as Duratothemax said.... just wire a inline switch to the yellow wire (power wire) of the ipod2car. This will allow you to kill the power to the ipod2car.

I was having problems with the ipod2car causing interference when I switched over to xm. however, after installing the switch.... I have no interference or volume drop.

good luck

I brought a IPOD unit unit from crutchfield made by usa spec. It can be confirgured in a variety of different ways, the aux cd port if you don't have the changer, or by tapping one of the wires, using the xm2 function. Only took me about 45 minutes to install. It has the cable and port for the IPOD but also RCA jacks to connect another device. Crutchfield does also provide the vehicle specific harness.

does that work with the steering wheel controls etc? what is the product number? I dont have the bose system as I got rid of my 01 because we will soon need 6 belts... I am thinking of switching out my speakers and adding the iPod to the factory system... No problem with wierd impedances with the standard one disk XM player is there?
