: 330 Miles and Ready for UG
Charley 07-06-2005, 01:03 AM Ok I just bought my 05 LLY 4x4 duramax....so I am a little new here but I already have the bug to upgrade on power.... you see my last truck was an 03 F-150 Harley(for sale) flashed to about 400 ponies and 4.10 gears so Im feeling a little shy right now on the giddyup.... So I called a local shop in CA and this is what he suggested .... bully dog lil pup, magnaflow 5" exhaust and an AFE cool air intake... he says I will be very impressed and should see about 115+ Horsepower, smoking tires with a 2nd gear chirp.... He also said that I should not remove the cat as the LLY motors actually lose HP from it's removal because they like the backpressure created from the Cat... I would like this thing to be ballsy, reliable and most importantly lose the turbo lag if possible.... all suggestions or opinions are appreciated and thank you in advance!

I don't know the specific number but I know for a fact we don't lose HP when out kitty died :D

Hmmmm, Ya I'm wondering the same thing, but this guy really seems to know his ship:D

Find a new guy IMO, last time i checked your turbo is your back pressure, maybe he was thinking about those "new" non turbo LLYs. And last time i checked i didnt lose any HP.:ro) KILL THE KITTY... and then get the stick!
McRat 07-06-2005, 01:51 AM Removing the cat reduces EGT's and spools a bit quicker.
Intake? Minor gain. $$/HP is poor.
Any tune 85RWHP or higher will slowly slip the Allison until it limps. A 175RWHP tuner will hurt the clutches in very short order.
Good news? A mild tune and exhaust will really wake the Dmax up. If you want to go nuts though, the build list changes. There are off-the-shelf bolt-ons for the LLY that will exceed 450RWHP and run mid 13's in the heaviest trucks, if you have a stout trans behind it.
Torque is the enemy of transmissions, and the "tuned" Dmax makes huge amounts. 900ftlb and up at the tires.
Charley 07-06-2005, 01:57 AM Why do I get the feeling this truck is gonna cost me like my boat:eek: ;)
McRat 07-06-2005, 10:33 AM Put on a small tuner first. Nothing in the automotive kingdom matches the $/HP of the diesel tuners. Run just 40-60HP. If you decide that is not enough, then it gets expensive.
doughboy 07-06-2005, 10:59 AM FWIW,
My good friend called BullyDog and talked with the engineering department. According to the testing they have done, the best gains they have seen are with the tuner and a cat-back exhaust. As was mentioned above, the type of turbo on the LLY needs some backpressure. When the kitty was removed, there were no major gains.

gardnerteam 07-06-2005, 01:13 PM NAW - it won't cost you like your boat. It will cost you ten times as much as you will use it more, more goodies are made for it, asphalt is not as forgiving when you dump power to it as water is, and making your truck have more power and go faster is a stronger addiction than making your boat fly on water. It's just money! Lots and Lots of money. Some of us do it until we die, others get a little more maturity in our old age. Do YOUR thing. Enjoy.
JJs DuMax 07-07-2005, 09:53 PM charley, I had the same experience with a local shop here in J'ville. Remember they are in the business of selling products, soooooo? ;)
McRat hit the nail on the head IMHO. JJ :)

Yeah they are trying to sell you a full exhaust system, IMO go to your local muffler shop, buy the system without the muffler have them put it on and have them make a custom downpipe and put a straight pipe where the muffler went, I did that and it cost me about 450 bucks... AND SOUNDS AWESOME :ro)
