: Went over to the dark (tuned) side.
stump_breaker 05-05-2010, 10:42 AM Ok, so even though I'm basically a leave-it-alone type person when it comes to tuning the LBZ, after weeks of reading on this site and others I decided to go with a tune. At first I wanted to get a Hypertech but could not find a used one in the range I wanted to pay. Then I looked at the Predator and came really close to pulling the trigger but backed out after reading numerous "trashed my tranny" threads plus I wanted a pyro installed before installing a tune. I finally got a great deal on the Edge Evolution and since it comes with a pyro and turbo brake plus continous monitoring of OBD's, it covers everything I'm looking for. I don't need the turbo brake right now but it's better to have it and not need it...yadda, yadda, yadda.
So anyway, what I have gleaned for my research:
* Updated the Evo last night from their website. Took about 20 or so minutes.
* Going today to buy a new 21-64 drill bit and 1/8 NPT tap for the pyro install. The tune will not go on the truck until this is complete. Hopefully I will get it installed tonight. Hopefully....
* install tune and take it easy for a few weeks until the tranny learns.
* 1300* on the pyro should be the safe temp. Anything over and it's could burn up the engine.
I was real (and still am to some extent) aprenhesive about the tune install with all the limped tranny threads I have read but I believe with my highway princess driving style in the truck and rolling into the skinny pedal, I will be ok. I don't hot rod the truck and mostly just highway cruise which is the purpose of the tune, to increase highway MPG although having all the diagnostics will be nice as well.
Did I leave anything out?
Canadian LBZ 05-05-2010, 11:18 AM Your transmission will be fine. I've got 90,000km worth of hard driving with my tuner at 90hp or above. Never limped mine. The best insurance for your transmission is a Transgo Jr. shift kit. 1300 degrees is extemely safe, you can go to 1400 easily without much worry.

i have an lmm with the edge race on it.you will see more than 1300 degrees .even hard ramp acceleration has seen these temps wether on level 1 2 or 3.
theaceman 05-05-2010, 12:52 PM @ Stump ... Im going to live thru you for a while.
Check back and let us know how things go.
You are doing exactly what I'd like to do, I just dont have the ballz to squeeze the trigger.
cowdoc 05-05-2010, 01:46 PM Your tranny should be fine. I have >146k on my '07. It has been tuned since the second week I got it and I have never even limped the tranny. I don't race and I don't dog it a lot. Just load a mild tune and enjoy the ride!
hillbilly_ryan 05-05-2010, 06:20 PM I run mine on a 90hp tune and have done so for the last year and a half. No trans. problems and have even run it at the local 1/8th mile track a few times, to shut up a few rice-burner drivers!!!
mtnbike4522 05-05-2010, 08:16 PM i leave mine cranked up all the time with no tranny issues, even when spraying. and i leave my pyro defuels set to 1550 for around town, and off for the dyno

I noticed you said your Edge programmer came with a Turbo Brake? I just looked on Edge's site at several of their programmers, including the Evolution. They don't mention anything in the descriptions about a turbo brake feature. Is this something you got extra along with your programmer?

From my understanding, the updated program gives you a turbo brake feature in the second level. I could not find it on their site either but I have read about it on here and on other towing sites.
stump_breaker 05-05-2010, 11:33 PM *sigh*
Anybody know if the little bung the thermocouple attaches to is an over-the-counter part? This just turned into an ordeal.
I knew I should have just paid someone to install it....
dmaxboy08 05-05-2010, 11:41 PM to answer ur question for the egt, all the hardware should have came with it. second, i would be very careful about letting the egts get to 1300 degrees. i know alot of boys have hit higher numbers and havent had any issues, but not everyones truck is the same. if i were you and it hit 1300 or higher i would let out of it. thats getting into the class of metal starting to melt and ur pistons having a few extra holes in them.

I got everything installed last night and apparently my thermocouple does not work so while on the phone today with Edge, I thought I would ask about the turbo brake feature. It only works in the second program level and only when the T/H button is pressed. Also contrary to some threads I have read, the Evolution does not defuel. The later models can be programmed to do so but not the Evolution. I would like to see a small defueling from 4th to 5th just as a bit of a safeguard but it should not be much of a problem hopefully.
Regardless, level 2 is a real kick in the butt over about 2000 rpm's. I can see how one could burn up a transmission by having too much "fun". It really wakes the truck up. I thought stock power was fine but it really doesn't compare. Passing traffic is so much smoother and confident. Not crazy about the increased smoke with increased throttle but it's not black and billowing just dark and hazy. It also got rid of the hiss at idle and gave the truck a good deep growl. Loving that! The OBD is great but I quickly found that only 4 parameters showing at a time is annoying since it offers about 15 different ones to choose from. Some it offers are already covered well enough by your dash gauges. You can also set warnings on various parameters of your truck - engine temp, tranny temp, EGT, etc. - and if you exceed these preset levels the Edge will start flashing red to alert you to the problem. It's like an extra set of eyes on your gauges.
Once I get the egt part working I really think this is going to be a worthwile investment. So far even with the annoyances of installation, I'm happy with it but then I've had it on for less than 24 hours.
hillbilly_ryan 05-07-2010, 05:35 PM Sounds like a good deal. I had a lot of fun with mine when I first reprogrammed it. Just don't have too much fun, hate to see ya tear something up. I do wish that my programmer had a turbo brake feature, but oh well. When I get home from deployment I think I will be hitting up Brayden over at Fleece Performance for one of his turbo brakes. But good luck to you and have fun!!!
l82vette79 05-10-2010, 07:13 PM First off I've had my truck programmed since 30k now have 115k no limp or any problems. Just for the record 1200 all day long is no problem 1300 for a few min is ok IE a big hill. You can run 1400 1500 for 30 seconds a minute no problem. Thats just my opinion. If you have a egt gauge on a bone stock truck you will relize that the LBZ runs hot from the factory. my truck with 65hp tune won't go above 1250 no matter how hard I run it.

Hopefully I will find out soon enough. I've been waiting since Saturday (ordered Friday with confirmation email at 10:45am cst) for my new EGT probe. Edge was supposed to ship same day overnight since I ordered before noon MST. BULL! Then they sent it signature required and I don't get in until after 5pm so there is nobody to sign for it. Hopefully I will get it tomorrow (Tuesday) since I am leaving a signature on the UPS slip left stuck to my door. Apparently the one I left for them on a signed piece of paper with a note was not good enough.
I am not pleased at all with EDGE customer service. Maybe this is an isolated incident since I have read they are normally pretty good.
I'm running the Economy tune right now but I gained no MPG on a weekend highway run so I'm going to bump it back up to level 2 once the probe is installed.

Update since I can't edit a post on this site for some reason, It's not Edge but a vendor called Edge Juice Products out of Helena Montana. When I called them I got a that's-your-problem-not-mine attitude. Horrible customer service! I might get my probe tomorrow when I go pick it up 40 miles away.
MAGNUM06 05-11-2010, 07:20 PM I run mine on level 3 as long as I'am not towing. If you drive it like a sane person you will probably see a slight gain in mpg. Level 1 & 2 never increased my mpg. And besides level 3 is alot more fun even for us old boys!:)

Old boys? I'm only 37! :D
stump_breaker 05-24-2010, 01:25 PM Update -
*loving the rumble with no more hiss
*Loving the extra power especially when towing
*Loving the turbo brake when towing
*Loving the 4 gauge read-out with the Evo although I can't seem to settle on which parameters I want to read so I'm always changing them
*Have not gained any significant fuel mileage increase on level 2 and I'm not going to level 3. Maybe on the highway there is an increase IDK but I have not had a chance to take the truck on any long trips to verify. My DIC is very accurate and setting it on the highway at 65 mph has seen 21+ for short runs but it drops quickly once I get back into stop-and-go driving. First tank on level 2 which included some trailer towing in-town netted 15.XX mpg average. Second tank just normal driving netted 16.XX mpg average.
I still recommend it though.

No, mileage gains because you are having to much fun!!!:D
ryan v 05-24-2010, 09:08 PM will the edge evolution leave a trace on the computer? cus i'm still trying to get some warranty work done on my truck.

Anymore updates? Thinking about trying this unit?

Not if you have a 01-07 classic and you return it to stock before you take it in. Get efi, lift pump, tranny. Then you "old boys" will really have some fun.

Still liking it. Detuned to level 1 since that is plenty enough power for me and it takes the strain off the truck.
woodrow246 11-01-2010, 12:56 AM Ive ran mine on level 4 for 2yrs now..2 when towing heavy, the level 4 smoke show is hard to beat. TB is a nice addition as well. The evo has been a nice addition for sure. Hot 5,6 and 7 are fun but dont really run em much.
