: tough situation...
MUD DIGGER FL 05-04-2010, 01:50 AM hey guys im in a tough situation. i recently lost my job and money is tight...
my question is how many miles is the max without hurting my diesel engine before an oil change..... im at 5059 miles since my last and im not running synthetic...:/ if i have to get money together and do a oil change what oil will be recommended. thanks in advance btw if it matters i have 57,000 miles
LtEng5 05-04-2010, 02:32 AM you could easily run out to 10k and then do a filter swap and top off.....if ya ever get interested you could switch over to AMSOIL at the next full fluid change and then you could; with out question do a filter change at 10-12k and a fluid change ever 25k or even more with sample testing
what ever you do just make sure you keep around 10-12k on fuel filter changes
Paul Clancy 05-04-2010, 08:03 AM Dino and filter is cheap. OLM works well. Hang in there.
LMMKnight 05-04-2010, 09:59 AM you could easily run out to 10k and then do a filter swap and top off.....if ya ever get interested you could switch over to AMSOIL at the next full fluid change and then you could; with out question do a filter change at 10-12k and a fluid change ever 25k or even more with sample testing

Not true. If he still has the DPF on his truck he is supposed to change it when the Oil Life Monitor says to. The DPF and the way GM cleans it out introduces fuel into the oil so Amsoil reduced their drain interval to the manufacturer’s stated interval.
Your best bet is to find a sale on oil somewhere and change it when the Dash says to.
knaffie 05-04-2010, 12:29 PM I understand money being tight, but think of the consequences long term if you don't change your oil. Change it when the dash says to, no later. They have "Traveler" brand 15W-40 oil at my local TSC store that is super cheap, I think $6 a gallon.
MUD DIGGER FL 05-04-2010, 12:37 PM ok guys ill do my best to change it today... thanks for all the comments really appreciate it also would love to learn more about this "amsoil" thats everybody is using......? thanks again.
knaffie 05-04-2010, 12:41 PM Just search for the word amsoil and you can read for hours!
carter_44 05-04-2010, 12:42 PM on my truck i do not go by the dic. i dont trust a computer to tell me when i need to change oil. i do 3 months for 4-5K miles whichever comes first. alot of guys say i can go much longer but changing oil is cheap insurance for a good running truck.
i run delo in everything i own and have a coupel gas trucks over 450K miles so i must be doing something right.
rpickett11178 05-04-2010, 02:04 PM i agree with carter cheap insurance to change your oil i change mine every 3-5K and my fuel filter every 10k or when she starts feeln slugish
MUD DIGGER FL 05-04-2010, 02:25 PM Thanks Again Carter 44 Youve Came Through A Lot For Me Lately...
duramaxxin 05-04-2010, 02:54 PM I change my oil every 5k and I run shell rotela synthetic. Like carter says its cheap insurance, shit in my old sandcar i would change the oil every trip after goin to glamis cheap insurance for a 30k motor
knaffie 05-04-2010, 02:59 PM Agree with that too. My engine in my quad cost about $3500. I change it after every ride. The guys with the $$$$ race engines change it after every race. But that's somewhat different because the clutch fibers end up in the oil. Regardless of which type of engine, you can buy A LOT of oil for the cost of replacing an engine!
heymccall 05-04-2010, 03:06 PM All my Dmax's, LMM included, have had the oil changed per the oil life monitors in the dash, using Dino oil and fleetguard, Napa, Donaldson, or Delco filters. Never, ever, have I had an issue, and I've got '05s nearing the 200k mile mark, and LMMs crossing the 100k mile mark.
Typically, the intervals fall between 8 & 11k miles on the oil life monitors. Never done injectors, seals, or even valve covers on any of them. Nor turbos or internals. My Dino oil is Conoco Fleet Supreme or what ever the quikie lube has.
jfarr 05-04-2010, 04:14 PM I've had about 5 changes and the DIC interval avg's bwtn 9-10k on my truck. I've had used oil analyis (UOA) run on two, maybe three changes and things are just fine, oil actually has quite a bit more life in it according to the numbers. this is plain old dino oil DELO 15w40 with AC Delco OEM filters.
Some people love to change oil every 3-5k miles and that certainly doesn't hurt anything, but with today's oil technology, it seems a bit unnecessary unless you are in a very grueling use category (which 90%+ of us DMax owners probably are not).
Since $$ is tight, don't worry about UOA, just change it when the DIC tells you at a minimum, or more freqently if you desire, and once things turn around run a batch out to when the DIC says its done and send a sample off. I bet you will find the info interesting.
JIMMMY 05-04-2010, 06:49 PM hey guys im in a tough situation. i recently lost my job and money is tight...

10K on oil/filter change & 11 zerks lube, or DIC, or 1 year whichever is first.
15K on fuel filter change, or DIC whichever is first. This is per the Duramax supplement owner's manual.
;)
LawrenceFromTor 05-04-2010, 09:20 PM And that's with a safety margiin built in.
joeburnside 05-04-2010, 10:16 PM I'm sorry to hear about your hard times Mud Digger FL.
I'm glad I stopped in to read this, I use Amsoil and I change the oil once a year ~13K and the filter every 3 to 4K. I didn't know Amsoil changed their stance on intervals per their website (http://www.amsoil.com/storefront/deo.aspx)
•2007-2010 Dodge 6.7L, Ford 6.4L, GM 6.6L LMM light duty diesel pickups must follow OEM drain interval. Drain intervals can be extended further with oil analysis.
This site is the best for info.
Oregonnovaguy 05-04-2010, 10:53 PM My last oil change I went 6000 mi, OLM said 50% (IIRC) sent sample to Blackstone, they said I could go to 8k between changes. My truck is stock, and fuel dilution was not a problem.
Primed2win 05-04-2010, 11:04 PM A lot of guys on here on doing 10K changes on dino oil with no problems. I ran 7K on my last and changed it with 29% oil life left on DIC. You can easily push it another 2K miles. Hopefully you'll get lucky and find work before then. Good luck
Bartman432 05-04-2010, 11:35 PM Sorry to hear about the job. I feel really bad you're in that situation. I hope things turn around quickly for you. I dont have to throw my two cents in about your oil changes, I think everybody gave you the info you needed. Good luck and let us know how the job hunt goes.
LambofGod 05-05-2010, 12:40 AM Hope you find something soon.
skyhigh4by 05-05-2010, 01:21 AM When I bought my truck the dealer told me that the DIC calculates based on driving habits and climate or something like that but they said that it really is only a guesstimate. I go about 10,000 KMs normally but my last one I kept forgetting and I went about 18,000KMs.
heymccall 05-05-2010, 11:44 AM It's a lot more than a guesstimate.

LambofGod 05-05-2010, 12:53 PM I was told by my Dealer Manager when I bought my truck that the DIC is a unique system that measures driving habits to calculates oil usage and oil changes. German cars have the same systems and they usually change oil at around 15k and most use synthetic oil nowadays. These cars don't even have a dip stick but rather track oil level via the computer system. When the car is a quart low the engine light comes on and tells you to go to the dealer for a service/quart of oil. I think the DIC systems of 'Today' are elaborate capable systems and I have my faith in them to work properly. However, I think if you tune your motor, "All Bets are off." I religiously change my oil every 5k and use synthetic because I tune my motor. I wouldn't be concerned about going 7-10k if I didn't pull or didn't hammer on the truck any...just say'n. You should change the filter and add a quart if you do go over the 5k I believe.
mtb rider 05-09-2010, 03:00 AM Change the oil on you truck. Do whatever you got to do but do not run it past oil filter life indication! You still have the DPF, with oil like you are concerned with fuel contamination in the oil, oil contamination occurs during regens when the ECM pumps raw fuel through the upstroke of the piston putting raw fuel in the exhuast to burn soot. Raw fuel slips past the rings and mixing with the oil, shortening it's life. Fuel in the oil will make the oil loose lubrication properties and cause wear on the engine. If you have a DPF, you need to change the oil when GM says!
chevyguy71 05-09-2010, 10:50 AM I change my oil every 3000 miles because I have a lifetime oil changes from the dealer or i would go longer if I had to pay for it.
couldbefun 05-09-2010, 10:34 PM advanced auto parts usually runs a sale on mobil one...5 quarts and a filter for 29 bucks
231samuel 05-12-2010, 02:49 PM advanced auto parts usually runs a sale on mobil one...5 quarts and a filter for 29 bucks
yea but not for 10 quarts and a BIG filter haha.
If i were you man, i'd go till the oil chimed at me! assuming your truck is still under warranty i see no reason not to do everything your truck tells you "if it ain't broke don't fix it" and then if the DIC is wrong and you engine fails because of it then that's on GM to fix isn't it?
