Yesterday I was towing my fifth wheel home. It is about a 90 mile trip. When I got home we noticed some petroleum type spray from the front drivers wheel well. Upon closer inspection today it looked like it was coming from a factory overflow tube that is on that side. Anyone know what the fluid is and what may have caused it? As a side note, I was in 4wd high for about 20 miles, I forgot to go back to 2wd when I almost got stuck in the campground.

Front diff vent tube. Got it a bit hot there I'd guess...

I now think it was oil from the overflow, blow by tube. Anyone else have a comment to add?

I have the same overspray, front driver side bumper continuing up the top hood and fender. I only have 211 miles on it and have never put in 4 wheel drive.
Is this a problem? Should I bring it in?

Had the same issue with my '02---found out the top of the shock had a "problem" & blew stuff all over the wheel well---probably the vent tube, though.

Well it is a tube that literally dangles out the fender well. Should I be worried or check a fluid level. Oil and Powersteering seem fine. How do you check the diff. fluid?

I didn't like the fact that the end of my diff vent hose was positioned where it could catch mud/dirt from the wheel well. The end dangled just below the wheel well liner in clear sight from the wheel. I kept the same loop in the hose, but used tie wraps to fasten it to the inside of the liner. I pulled the cap off the hose and cleaned the dirt out of it.
Find your front diff, drivers side. The vent hose we have been talking about should connect hear the top. You should see two plugs. Remove the top plug and see if you can tell where the level of the fluid is. The front diff only takes two quarts. If you do think you need to add fluid, I would drain it all and replace instead of trying to add more.
