With 34000 miles on the truck I peeked in on the
power steering fluid level.......

WOW is was below the dip stick. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Ermm.gif

Questions:
1. I see no leaks, so is this just normal loss?
2. What is a good recommendation to top it off
with? In my garage I've got some 4 year old
Penzoil and Quaker State Dexron III
...also some "GUNK" brand Dexron II http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Geek.gif Edited by: 56Nomad

Got my question answered......

Gotta use GM part # 1052884

I went to my dealer and they gave me a bottle.

They said DO NOT use Dexron III®. The GM
power steering fluid is different formulation,
different color too.

My level was down because I had previously had
the steering shaft and bearing replaced.

That sounds like it was pretty low -- I wouldn't consider it normal anyway.

Dexron in ATF. I'm not certain the PS takes ATF, but since I've never had to top off mine I can't say for sure.

What is the difference between GM part # 1052884 and regular power steering fluid that you can buy in the auto parts stores?? Got me a little concerned now.....

Generally speaking (Get it? Generally? General Motors? GM? Well, I thought it was funny anyway...http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif), there is no difference.

PS fluid is rated and spec'd, just like oil, ATF, brake fluid, etc. So long as you meet, or exceed, the rating that GM wants you can use anybody's oil/fluid.
