So I'm cruising down the highway on Sat. I hear and BANG, and the truck jerks a few times... more and more resistance. I'm 80km from anywhere so I just keep driving and the truck is working to maintain speed. I hear howling and grinding, and can hardly hear myself think..... but I'm thinking I don't care what it is I'm driving into the dealer like this.

Get to the dealer.... noise is gone, but when you try to put it into 4wd the DIC says "Gear range inoperative" or something along those lines.

So I guess I'll find out later this week if the transfercase is completely screwed.

Oh btw at the dealership infront of me I had them check and note that the transfercase fluid was up to level.... ;)

I don't know about the new ones but the older cases were pretty tough. I had an '82 with the NP208 that leaked oil out the frontshaft. Well it locked up on me on the way to San Antonio to visit my parents once. Filled it full of oil and let it cool off, it was like nothing ever happened. I would say that tc had over 200k miles on it.

So I just got a call from the dealership and my transfercase is completely destroyed..... getting replaced under warranty. Had to have an adjuster look at it and approve the $4000 fix.....

Same story, just got mine back last week. I visited 2 dealerships complaining of grinding noise from the transfer case...."sorry sir, that's all within standard road noise for a truck" Within 2-weeks it was totally destroyed. Yup $4000 all covered under warranty.

hahahaaaa... awesome!

How many kilometers on your truck?

On a side note... I complained about the lack of cool air from the a/c and they are also replacing the condenser.... :ro)

Fortunately my AC works fine (one of only 3 things on my truck it seems)..

I have 110KM. Owned her for 8 months and been in the hospital 10 times. so very very tired. In her defence the 10 visits were for "only" 4 different issues. The rest of the visits were due to dealer ignorance.

1- Tranny sensor malfunction (3-visits and there was a service bulletin)
2- full injector replacement (3-visits and an obvious bulletin)
3- U-joints (1st try!!!)
4- Transfer case (3-visits)

Was the fluid level ok. I have seen several where the oil pump in the extension housing has worn threw the case. The pump has square outer tabs that are about 1/8 inch thick that lock into the case and they wear threw and cause an oil leak. The lack of oil causes the failure.

Yes the fluid was clean and up to level. I had the dealership check that right infront of me. I had checked it myself two days before the thing let loose b/c I suspected something was wrong, so when I dropped the truck off I wanted to show them that it was up to level so that they couldn't give me a line about being out of fluid.

I'm thinking maybe it suffered from the same thing as your dad's truck homeskillet.
