: 813.8 Gal = 10,313.2 Mi
Harvester 04-29-2010, 06:51 PM I need to get home and change my oil... I'm leaving Mass in the morning to Miami with another Ferrari.
That is 12.67 MPG in tow mode almost all the time. I've seen it do 14 MPG with an empty trailer and 16-17 MPG if I stay out of it and not towing.
All the miles have been towing a 20' Trailex single car enclosed trailer. Maybe 1,000 miles has been an empty hauler.
My truck has 47,000 miles. I need your suggestions on an economy tuner. I'm looking for improved mileage. When I get back to Atlanta I'm putting in a 100 gal fuel tank/tool box in the bed. What's the best way to connect the fuel tank to my existing tank? I'd rather do that then manual transfer if I can.
The truck has performed flawlessly. This is an extreme example of a trip this truck is about to start doing all the time. I'm going to see what a duramax is really made of this year.
69project 05-01-2010, 05:33 PM If you are getting that kind of mileage with the trailer you are towing, you are doing well if you ask me. Guess your V nose makes a difference. I have a 28 foot Haulmark and if I am loaded it's between 8-10 and unloaded 10-11. My trailer empty weighs 4500 so that might explain things a bit. I also run between 70-74 on flat terrain and 55-65 in the mountains so I am sure I don't help my case there either.
I would think any of the tuners out there would help a bit.
Harvester 05-01-2010, 06:30 PM I hear ya.
My trailer is very lite and only 5'6" inside height. I've seen a jeep cherokee pull the same trailer. It's hard to feel it behind my dually. But that's the way it should be when you spend 20 grand on a trailer. I can get cars that sit 3" off the ground inside and none are too wide for it.
I've got a 20' spray foam insulation trailer that's very heavy/square and I get 8 or 9 with it.
I've decided I'm going to do the exhaust and get rid of all that junk underneath plus add the undecided on tuner.
Some guy at a truck stop was telling me about having 2 tuners on his dodge.
Does that make sense to anyone?
I'm hauling a ferrari GTO today and making 11.5 doing 70-72 into the wind going to Miami. I can't keep up with this traffic down I-75!
After economy mods, what do you think my dually will get mpg wise?
03SMURF 05-01-2010, 07:10 PM Tuning aside, I would ditch your ranch hand if you want to maximize mileage. Losing the extra weight will help your front end parts last longer, too.
Brad92 05-01-2010, 07:16 PM PPE and a DPF delete.

i've been fighting that for a while. I'm sure it would help.
I've decided the reasons to keep it outweigh the reason to take it off.
There is nothing areodynamic about my truck... It's stock too. I'm just ready to spend some cash on something I think will pay for it's self over time.
Am I wrong to think that without the cat and dpf, then adding a tuner, I can get 16-18 towing?
After the deleate/tuner I'm going to add the cognito level kit and go with 19.5's. I spend hours thinking about this crap... lol
ryanryan 05-01-2010, 08:15 PM Edge Evo Race...MBRP Turbo-Back Exhaust. Very happy with that setup on my truck.

I doubt you will get 18 mpg towing, but it would definitely help.
LtEng5 05-01-2010, 10:10 PM Edge Juice on econo all the time and the guys swears 19.2 empty and 13ish when loaded with 40' tow hauler 5th wheels ( 4X4 cclb drw )...
contact ATTA in Florida for the fuel transfer system..normal moe is automatic and can be set for a "manual fill mode"

cgreen 05-02-2010, 08:55 AM Northern tool has a manual transfer system that works well. You can wait until the truck gets low, then open the valve and the truck will refill going down the road. It won't overfill and when you stop you can flip it back off. My dad has it on his 06 dually and I'm about to do the same with mine.
jim87vette 05-02-2010, 06:49 PM Have your boss give you a raise...looks like he can afford it lol j/k.Really like the cargo you got.

What does that system cost? I didn't see the price.

I'll look into the NT system. It sounds like the way I want to set it up.
I just bought and now have a UWS 100 gal fuel tank-tool box in my bed. The way I wanted to set it up is with a ball valve off the bottom of the tank to a braided hose going through my bed attached to a T valve on my intake fuel supply hose. It seems like a simple gravity fed set up.

I am the boss...
My paid for truck and trailers, my insurance, my fuel costs that need to be reduced so my profits increase.

The J/k was a just kidding sorry .Was the cargo inside also yours or do you just deliver items with the trailer/your business?Sorry to be off topic.Myself I'm not big on the add-on gadgets for improving fuel mileage as everyone seems to be all over the place on their numbers? How you drive these trucks makes a huge difference and of coarse where?
LtEng5 05-03-2010, 09:04 PM Dans Service Center in Elkhart sells a version of this system and IIRC its around $200 installed...He usually does them with a tank install and includes the hoses and a very large CAT filter....so when selling as a combo deal he takes some of the tank and unit price and even more if he does the install

Trucstop 05-05-2010, 08:01 AM Hi I have a RDS tank tool box from Northern ,also the fill system noted by gmc3500 . works great . 2 years without a problem. Nice to have the extra 55 gal. I get over 1250 miles between fills. My oem tank shows mt after 20 gals ,great to have that extra 55.

I spoke with Nate and he wants to take a look at it. He deals with transfer flow systems and doesn't know if it will work with a UWS tank. I will be in the area next week and I'd spend a couple hundred buck on that system he sells.
I checked out NT and the ebay kit. That's the back-up-plan. I would want to add a inline fuel filter. What fuel filters are you adding to the line?
Also, has anyone who has the gravity fed plumbing been pulled over or has anyone ever had their bed fuel tank inspected by the cops or dot?

Gravity feed is perfectly legal. If the DOT says otherwise, tell him that the law states that the tank can not be gravity fed directly into a carburater or injector. Since you will be gravity feeding into a tank, which in turn gets pumped through a filter, it is legal.
Harvester 05-05-2010, 09:07 AM ^Thank you... Everyone.
You wouldn't believe all the bs I hear.
LtEng5 05-05-2010, 12:44 PM I have the NT transfer fill tube and I use a pump manually switch, to transfer fuel.....I use a small glass "performance" fuel filter you can get at most auto stores...nothing perfomance about it; just a 5 micron screen filter in a glass tube; but I guess when its under the hood and right next to a carb "it looks cool, so it must make the car go faster"; now thats perfomance....I change this filter at the same time as the under hood fuel filter and you should see the crap thats is in this filter....
HossLanier 05-07-2010, 05:48 PM I have 91gal. aux tank, gravity fed and I love it. It has a manuel t-valve that I turn off. with long bed, that is 125 gallons @10mpg towing gives me 1250miles. I went from Chicago to Brownville, Tx and loved not having to stop. What name brand of trailer do you have? you can look at my facebook or myspace I have picture of my setup. Best of luck.

RDS Tank, filter assembly, and gravity kit from Northern tool. 10 GPM pump from e-bay (rated for diesel).
You can come out of the bottom, but I want to leave anything on the bottom that settles there and use the drain to get it out.
Basically I have the RDS 60 gal toolbox/tank. I came off the pickup outlet with a 3/8" nipple. I soldered some rolled cooper tubing in for a pickup (trimmed 3/4" from the bottom). I then increased with a 3/8" x 1/2 90 elbow. That to a 1/2" street 90 elbow. 1/2" nipple to 1/2" to 3/4" coupling. 3/4" nipple to 3/4" to 1" bushing into filter assembly. 1" to 3/4" bushing to nipple out of the filter to the pump. 3/4" nipple to elbow and 3/4" to 5/8" hose bushing. I used silicon hose to the tee from the gravity feed kit. I bought another 3/4" to 5/8" hose barb to attach to the filler hose tee in the kit.
This setup works awsome....perhap too much so. The vents won't keep up with the transfer volume so the primary tank will fill so fuel will blow out of the cap. Although it does fill fast enough to trick the gauge. Basically I just pull off the highway, pull both caps and flip the switch. Transfer takes about 2 to 2-1/2" mins. I hop in the trailer, use the restroom, grab something out of the fridge and we're back off... Awsome! I have definately been able to pass up some higher priced fuel to make it to better pricing.
Harvester 05-16-2010, 10:22 AM Hoss that's a trailex trailer.
Chv- I like that set up. I wish I had the room for a filter system like that... I'm just going to stick a inline filter on and let her eat. If I have any issues I'll look into adding a pump so keep throwing out the tips and pics.
Here's my tank. The ebay kit and 2 new UWS fuel caps are waiting for me at home. I stopped letting fuel prices bug me as bad. I know shits about to change.
Thanks!
