Truck goes in to have the leaking water pump replaced tomorrow with 104,000 miles, so no warranty coverage. Censored

I've read in the forum that its a 4 hour job (about $200). Does anyone know the price of a new pump?

I chkd my w/o and they listed no costings as mine was done under (basic) warranty i.e not even a deductible. My pump wept from day one. You'll find the new pump won't have a weep hole ~ hoping its better. Sounds like you've had a fair amount of service out of yours tho. I seem to recall a ttl job est pricing on another thread here. Your labor est sounds more than fair maybe too fair? TX must have a very reasonable shoprate. G'luk

On edit: you could go to one of the GM parts website http://www.gmpartsdirect.com/results.cfm and search/price P/N 97216136 (I just did ~ looks like 217 dealer and 108 from gmparts direct) and a couple of gaskets P/Ns 94011694 & 97188663 (approx 32 dealer for both) plus 3 (gals/quarts?) Dexcool

I found another water pump thread the other night and thats where I got the 4 hours from. As I understand it, the hardest thing about it (and what is keeping me from doing it myself) is the R&R of the Harmonic Balancer. There is supposedly one bolt behind it that has to come out. The labor rate at our local GM shop is $47.50/hr.

P.S.--I've been adding coolant/water about every 3000 miles for the last year but couldn't find where i was loosing it. It finally showed its ugly head last week when I was hauling some round bales of hay that I bought---34,800 GVW at the scale.:eek:

Looks like you might save maybe 300 by doing it yourself ~ but will have the hassle/time whereas w/the dealer it'll have a warranty ~ FWIW, if the dealer does it, (this is gonna sound stupid) verify the dexcool has been put back in before you drive away. Have a couple of neighbors that had such an unfortunate experience that caused bigger problems still not resolved. Wasn't the same dealer either.

Like that shop rate ~ I do try to get most of my work done when in TX just because of better customer service ~ cavender @ Boerne has treated me well. Locally, it seems one needs to take a bat to get the dealer attn.

Update:

Picked up my truck from the dealer Wednesday after work. I asked them how much i owed and they said, "$100.00. We got cover under the 100,000 mile Powertrain Warranty.":cool2: :ro) :)

Actual mileage was 103,174.

Now thats how to keep customers happy!

My advice to all: If you are approaching 100K miles, inspect that weep hole closely. If its wet at all, take it in and at least get it documented.
