: Another new owner of the '05 Duramax & new to the forum
jeff 05 07-04-2005, 04:45 PM About two weeks ago I purchased a '05 GMC 2500HD SLT crewcab, 4x4 Duramax with the Allison auto trans, its pretty much loaded.
So far I have 2,500 miles on it and zero problems (had a couple of road trips), after reading some of the posts I have found on this forum I am a little worried about how reliable this truck is going to be.
I was thinking about adding the Edge Juice w/Attitude, up grade the air filter intake and exhaust system, but now I don't know?
Will the added upgrades void my warrenty in any way?
If I would have found this site and read some of the problems such as overheating, steering, injectors, etc. before I purchased my Duramax I might have had doubts and would have kept my 04 1500 Z71 offroad extended cab, which did ok for my needs until I made a 600 mile tow with a 4000# 4x4 on a trailer, the 5.3L had its hands full.
I sold my '68 4x4 and will not be towing it any more, but I still have my '70 Chevelle and it weighs just short of 4000#, I will be towing it to shows and such.
I hope I don't regret my new truck purchase.
So far I love the new truck :)
Jeff
jcreasy 07-04-2005, 04:52 PM I am with you. I just bought a 05 2500 with Duramax but a manual tranny hope it holds together!
Bill Gisse 07-04-2005, 05:05 PM I thinbk what you see on here is more of the exception than the rule.Would recommend you puta good 2 micron fuel filter (Nicktane is a good one)between the OEM filter and tank. I know the new filter onn the new trucks is supposed to be better and and help resolve the fuel problems but I beleive in insurance. As far as the other add on stuff I believe inn the old saying, "Play now and pay later". If you want to make your truck into a hot rod it will probaly cost you in the long run. Good luck and enjoy your truck.
HI Jeff. New Duramax owner here myself and I also have a 70 chevelle I plan on towing around. Small world huh? I am just learning about these trucks and am by no means an expert, but from what I have read here, the stock trans will only put up with a small amount of performance enhancement before starting to slip. The edge is supposed to de-fuel if it detects slippage, but it's detecting damage as well as slippage. I think I will stay stock except for a 4" exhaust and gages till till the warranty is up. I know myself and if i bought one of those tuners or a downloader, there's no way I could resist cranking it up!:muahaha:
Do some reading in the LLY electronics section, there is so much info there your head will explode!

Tommyquest 07-04-2005, 05:48 PM Hi Jeff. Me too. Just picked mine up last tuesday.:)
Jeff, Jcreasy, SMS, and Tommyquest......:welcome2: to The Diesel Place. This is your info super store and we are all here to help!!
Ciggy 07-04-2005, 07:07 PM I joined this site a while back cause I had the diesel bug..Me thinks I'm going to keep my 454 awhile longer..I have concerns about this huge discount that GM is offering..one is that GM is not making a profit on these machines..the warranty money that is built into the price is gone..so I think owners are going to hear a lot more of "that's normal" when they encounter a problem..the other thing is the resale value..hope I'm wrong!!
driveawedge 07-04-2005, 09:44 PM I read this forum before I bought my truck and got some jitters but I believe the issues here are the exception. I just turned 8,000 miles on it this weekend and so far the only issue I've had is a bad 4x4 indicator light panel (still not replaced but covered under warranty). I had one mysterious loss of prime on the injectors that required a 30 second reprime and I was underway again.
I just told my wife at the end of a 120 mile road trip yesterday that the more time I spend in the truck the more I like it.
BLUEHERON 07-04-2005, 10:51 PM This truck has no more or less problems than any other, IMO. When you're talking mass production, there are going to be a few lemons. The vast majority of trucks on the road are running without a problem, but there are a few that experience some, such as injector failure. That is a very small minority. Dropping 40k+ is nerve-racking to be sure, but you have made a good decision. These trucks are awesome and GM will stand behind them. As far as voiding your warranty with add-on mods, some dealerships are more picky than others, I have read. The smart thing to do is choose your mods carefully, know what you're buying and make sure you can remove them before any trip to the dealer. I don't think exhaust is an issue, unless you remove the cat, but programmers and chips are definitely a cause of concern when visiting the dealer. The Edge Juice/Attitude is a quick disconnect set-up as are many other mods. Check them out before investing. I've also heard that some of the Banks stuff is warranty-safe. Enjoy your new ride, and stop worrying about everything.......Also, why does everyone seem to have a '70 Chevelle to haul around???
Rob147 07-05-2005, 11:51 AM I have had my 2004 LLY for almost a year now, and have just turned over 14500 miles with zero problems. Here are a few observations:
1. Everything is stock (no engine mods) except I have added a Husky 16K EZ glide fifth wheel hitch, Firestone air bags, Prodigy brake controller, and Bilstein shocks.
2. I have used Stanadine Performance Formula with every tank of fuel since the truck was new.
3. I have the dealer change the oil and filter when the oil life monitor reaches 50%, which is about every 4000 miles with my style of driving.
I changed the trans. spin on filter at 7500 miles, and every other oil change thereafter.
4. I have never changed the fuel or air filters, but plan to do so every 15000 miles.
5. I tighten the IC hose clamps before each trip, or about once each month.
6. I run 55/55 in my tires unloaded, and 60/80 when towing my 14.2K fifth wheel, which has a 2600# pin weight - this is with stock 245 tires.
Hope this helps.

SWT Racing 07-05-2005, 09:53 PM I'm another new owner of an '05 Silver Birch Metallic 2WD Crew Cab 2500HD LS with the Allison transmission. I absolutely love this truck. Hopefully it will serve me well as my daily driver as well as occasional weekend tow vehicle for my twin turbo V8 Vega drag car.
I only have about 800 miles on the truck so far, but I've already bought a whole set of filters and some fresh "Grape Juice" for the rear end.;)
Bill W 07-05-2005, 10:20 PM Just got a LT extended. I only have 500 miles on it so far and really taking it easy. I am coming up to speed on Diesel maint., this forum is a lot of help. The LT has lots of gadgets to get used to:) .
G-Maxkingpuller 07-05-2005, 10:50 PM We just got our new 2500hd and think it is the bomb. No mater what everybody says, we will thouroughly enjoy that beautiful GMC.

It is good the hear some good experiences after reading some post from some folks that have had some bad luck with their new trucks.

:wtf: ? GM is making money on these trucks. They are NOT giving them away!! With the new and improved 07 halfies coming to the market, this is a great way to clear inventory. They are going to have to give them away once the new ones come to market. Then they would not be making money. The #1 step to buying a new vehicle is to find a dealership you can form a relationship with. Check out the service department. Talk to the mechanics. See how the place is run. If it meets your satisfaction, stick with it and you will not be hearing "it's normal" on every case. Any dealership can get the vehicle you want!

First off, welcome to the Place and congrats on your purchase!
This site is for information and problem solving! People with problems gather at forums to try to find solutions. It is true that some of these trucks have injector issues, but the trucks will most likely get you to a safe place and not strand you along the road. The General has your motor for the next 5 years 100,000 miles so you shouldn't be too worried. A very large majority of these trucks don't have issues. Be advised of possible situations and learn the early warning signs so you won't have a major problem. Rest easy and enjoy your truck. They are a blast to drive! Power enhancers are addictive, so be aware if you decide to get one! Good luck!
NUDIESEL 07-06-2005, 08:18 AM Hey Jeff congrats on the new truck yet one more newbe to the list have waited almost two month got my 05, 3500 DRW C/C withe the Duramax Ally combo last Thursday. Love it haven't done any driving like you so far only have 600 miles on it in a week. I am in the world of the old farts I guess plan to leave her stock, would like to upgrade the exhaust and Tranny cooler and add a secondary fuel filter looking at the Nick Tane just have to get it ordered and sent up here. I have to ensure that it will not effect the warranty though. I will be towing close to 15,000 when I pull my 5er in three weeks.
Enjoy is what I have been reading for weeks now.
