Is it safe to add a propane system to a stock setup, or do all the added hp's necessitate adding air intake/exhaust/tranny upgrades so you don't blow something out? Is any one propane system safest in this regard?

Thanks,
Oso

You don't really need any other upgrades if you wanna run the propane, lots of people use it just for the purpose of saving on fuel mileage while towing, other use it for big power upgrade, some people use it for both. I personally think that the powershot 2000 is the safest system to use in moderation or big power becuase it's stricktly a vapor system as is completely progressive with the amount of boost your truck is running. You can also turn it way down or turn it way up. You can also adjust the start time (comes on sooner or comes on later). I'm sure that other have their preference but thought I would throw in my .02

I have been running lp for 23K miles, often at more than 50% ratio to diesel. Recently I got 42 mpg on a tank of diesel, so I was probably around 70% on that tank. If you are going to hotrod the truck, you better do some trans upgrades. I haven't come up with a good way to defuel on shifts, so it's hard on the trans. Also, the torque goes way up in 5th, and it will slip 5th if you aren't careful.

Thanks for your responses. I'm not looking at it for hotrod purposes, more for fuel economy, both towing and commuting. (I realize there's some disagreement on whether propane provides any mpg or mp$ advantages - still doing my homework). As long as I don't floor it a bunch, I should be okay?

It does not require any other upgrades, ialthough exhaust and gauges are always a good idea. A variable/proportionate system is not as hard on the transmission as the power onset is smooth and steadily increasing.

I strongly recommend running exhaust and gages.

Propane alone seems to pull harder than edge level 2.

I really like towing with Edge/Attitude level 1 and Propane. It is very responsive, but still very smooth and safe. Edge/Attitude gives all of the gages and user settable audible warnings (Like EGT) but the Propane adds most of the extra power the way I use it.
With Edge Level 1 and Propane, my truck makes 690 Ft lbs and 305 HP to the wheels.(About as much as you should safely run on the stock Allison.)
Powershot alone adds 149 Ft lbs and 62 HP to the wheels on my truck.

is running lp at high percentages hard on the engine at all?

There is a point that is too much but at the levels Powershot will preset their system to run, you will have no problem at all. The power addition is as smooth as glass.
A big part of why the Powershot is so safe is because it is a truly variable system, not just on or off.
