: Need Help
ofdjeff 04-26-2010, 09:42 AM Having a recurring problem for the past two months now. Started up truck one afternoon, put it into gear and nothing from the accelerator. Idled back to the house and got on this website. Went out and restarted it and accelerator worked fine. Went to run some errands and reduced engine power light comes on. Pulled and cleaned air filter and MAF. Replaced and everything worked fine for a couple of days. Coming home from work two days later, truck started to idle weird and even lunged at stop lights or after I took my foot off the accelerator. Got home, looked at MAF, thought there could be some oil on it and cleaned again.
Everything has been good since. Last week I noticed after driving either to or from work, after I would shift to reverse to back in, the weird idle was back and the truck was lunging. This is after a 45 min drive. Have been through two tanks of fuel, and it isn't doing it everyday. Last night I started the truck up and it was idling fine, but no accelerator response again. Shut everything down and waited, fired it back up and had throttle response again, but now rough idle and lunging are back.
I have read the threads on here and do not which road to start down. Any help would be great.
Could my air filter be bad? #2 and #7 harness? FPR replacement? FICM harness rub?
Please help.
Thank you.
ofdjeff 04-26-2010, 08:31 PM So this morning I went out and pulled and cleaned the MAF, even though it didn't look dirty. Checked for the harness rub and found nothing, but i did place the harness in the heater hose as a precaution since I could see where it was rubbing on the plastic protector. Went to the store today. After start up all appeared to be fine. Drove down the road, came to a stop light and then no accelerator. Idled to the side of the road. Seemed to be idling fine, no codes or CELs. Shut down and restarted. Everything worked except now I had a rough idle and the lunging again. I got back to the house and even wiggled the connectors at #2 and #7 and did not notice any difference.
Anybody???? Please
jlawles2 04-26-2010, 08:38 PM You may try to pick the injectors, or unplug and replug. Just wiggle may not remake connection. My truck had strange idle for a while, then it did the injector thing. It actually sounded like it would miss a beat and sometimes set an error code. Since I picked it, the rough idle is gone, and so is the pilot injection rattle.
ofdjeff 04-26-2010, 08:49 PM Thanks. Think I will try that. Did you just do the "pick" on #2 and #7?
ofdjeff 04-26-2010, 11:02 PM I just finished the "pick." #2, #7 and my left index finger. Just did a little test drive and all seems good. Even seemed like the truck had it's old acceleration and the idle was a lot smoother. Hope the pick did it and it's not something more. Time will tell. Thanks for the help and for all the threads on here that gave me some trails to follow.
You guys rock!!!
02 2500hd 04-27-2010, 08:17 AM I would be looking at the throtle position sensor at the pedle.
catman3126 04-27-2010, 08:23 AM Symptoms may also point to the fuel pressure regulator, there was a guy on here recently with an LLY and his was acting like this IIRC the FPR did the trick......too bad it was 800$ and some change later though.
ofdjeff 04-27-2010, 10:16 AM Thanks for the suggestions. I just couldn't find someone on here with the exact same symptoms that I am having. Plus, I did have a dirty MAF the first time I got the reduced engine power light. I have not had it since I cleaned it though, but have had the no response from my pedal three times now. But with that has been the rough idle and lunging. It has also felt like it was miss firing, if that helps describe the feeling from behind the wheel. Yesterday after the "pick" the truck did seem to run better. I will be heading out in a little bit for another test this morning. we'll see though.
catman3126 04-27-2010, 12:33 PM I'm betting on the FPR cause of the rough Idle and the surging. anybody care to bet. :)
ofdjeff 04-29-2010, 02:51 PM So far so good. After the ice pick, I have not had any symptoms return... Yet. Drove about 3 hours down to San Diego yesterday on the 405 with no problems, and to my surprise, not alot of traffic.
ofdjeff 05-06-2010, 12:23 AM Everything has been good for the last few days. Today though the truck surged a bit followed by the check engine light. Hooked up the reader and got code P0698. 5 volt 3 circuit. Any suggestions. I'll be looking at the forums for something here. Thanks.
ofdjeff 05-06-2010, 03:36 PM Could this be a battery problem. Could that be the cause of the code P0698?
ofdjeff 05-07-2010, 07:07 PM Did it again today. Truck was running fine for approx 30 minutes, then started to idle rough and surge. There was no code for about 5 minutes, then CEL came on and had one hard code and one pending. It was P0698. Is this the FPR or am I having some sort of short in the harness somewhere. I have replaced the batteries this week, done the ice pick on #2 and #7. From what I can find on here, most people are getting codes that relate to the fuel system when it is the FPR. Am I right on that, or is the regulator not getting enough voltage to run.
I can clear the code with my scanner, it would return immediately sometimes and take about 5-10 minutes to come back. The truck was surging the whole time either with or without the code. Can someone please help me. Getting frustrated here!! Thanks.
ofdjeff 05-07-2010, 07:09 PM One more thing, I pulled the cap of the schrader valve and... I can't tell if it's leaking or not. At the base of the valve it was wet, but I did not see any bubbles or a puddle of fuel. It seems like what I see on here is people describing either bubbly fuel or a valve that is full of fuel. Maybe this helps. Thanks.
ofdjeff 05-18-2010, 01:19 PM Just an update in case anyone else is having a similar problem or code. After searching this site I came across a post where someone was having the same symptoms and code I was having. He said it was the large electrical connection on top of the driver's side valve cover. I looked at mine and it seemed fine, but I unplugged it, cleaned it, and put it back together and 10 days later I have not had the problem come back. Thank you very much to Tony Singer for your help. I hope that was the problem.
