If you search a little on ebay you'll find a better deal on a generic heatsink that you'll have to tap for mounting screws.

Many of us have utilized whatever was convienent to mount it on. I think infront of the radiator is the best spot.

Thanks for the reply QM, hmmm ya got me thinking now, if I can relocate out front in a constant air stream the heat sink should'nt be needed.

I used a very small piece of aluminum mounted out front and it is cool to the touch after operation and out of the engine's heat.

I have two Pentium heat sinks pasted to mine in the air filter box. Cheap to build, and stays COOL.

Better deal.

Thanks for the input Guys, I think I'm going to relocate behind the grill, a simple mounting plate and extend the wires, soldered and heat shrinked of course.

I put mine behind the front bumper. Had to drill 3 small holes in the bumper but I can remove it without taking off the grill which could be nice one the side of the road. 3 screws and off it comes. It should get plenty of air from the big hole in the bumper. Check out the posts here http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/showthread.php?t=35627
I've got a mount just like that one on Ebay that 95TsiAWD posted that I didn't use that I'll be listing someday.

The original FSD cooler is still in my opinion the best solution. There's a lot of guye reinventing the wheel claiming to be so much better etc, but none have made the investment that Beta has in developing and testing the product as well as devleloping an improved transfer pad, improved hardware etc. All of these "reinventions" followed the release of the Beta unit except for some guy who claims to have invented the concept back in 1994

 mode off...

Where do you get an extended harness to go with your relocation.

Talk to the man himself . . . . .

How weather tight are these PMD's. I purchased one from SSDiesel and mounted in on the intake and it started to act up the other day. I was a one occasion but I thought I would relocated it under the front bumper. Which leads me to the question of how weather resistant they are. It will be in the line of rain in the summer and of course snow and salt in the winter, is this going to be a problem? If so I like the idea of mounting it in the air box.

Speaking of mounting the pmd and cooler in the air box, has anybody ever figured out the approximate air velocity thru the air box at idle and other rpm?

Guys

I ask again, is the PMD weatherproof? I want to mount it behind front bumper

The one I have is, it's mounted behind the front liscence plate

Turbojunkie, I would say that the PMD is weatherproof since it is encased in plastic and it is sealed to its mounting surface. The harness plug too is a sealead plug. If it can take whatever elements it is subjected to in its home postion (riding on the injector pump) it will be even more suited to a cooler position behind the front bumper.

I have mine on a small heat sink right behind the grille. The heat sink is visable through the grille and the PMD is behind it. In Vancouver we had lots of rain lately and I never have problems. I believe it is fairly weather proof.

Thanks guys the I was hoping for these responses. I am going to extend harness and get it out of the engine bay, man it's hot underthere on these trucks.

Wade: I think JD says these engines pull thru about 450 cfm at 2000 rpm. Now, to figure out velocity, that would require I think some measurements or something. . . anybody know any engineers anywhere? Oh, that's right, that at work right now, aren't they??;)

Engineers yes, but the ones I know... well our guess is as good as their's. LOL. I'm planning on getting the extended harness as soon as I can per the advise of quantum mechanic.

After getting some sleep, I just realized that the amount of air moves up proportionately with the amount of heat the PMD puts off. e.i. : at WOT, you've got the most air. I guess I should sleep more often.

I don't think it makes them last much longer, it's just easier to change when it's mounted out of the engine bay. Lately, I've had the ones on both efi trucks ('94 & '96) have developed stalling problems, been retorqued again and are back in service. This makes I don't know how many times I've messed with them, seems like once a year.

Quantum,
Retorqued what? The four mounting screws?
Want a quick dismount where you don't need to mess with the grill? Three screws (see them in the bumper right above the plate) and remove it out the hole next to the license plate. Takes about 3 minutes. You can see back of heat sink at rear edge of bumper. Dare I say the best place ever in the history of 6.5's :D We will see..... http://asnowsquall.smugmug.com/photos/25637295-L.jpg

:exactly: Amen to that.

Someday, if the need arises, I'll remove the intake AND remove the PMD from the pump. Until then may it RIP. I dare say that those who remote the PMD and leave the old one on the pump as 'roadside spare', are kidding themselves. Let's see - wait for the engine to cool down enough to work on, go through extreme contorsions to fanagle the connector back on to the pump mounted PMD. Not my idea of fun. IMHO, best place for a spare PMD is in the glove box.

Hard, well, not compared to changing the injection pump, but more than changing the oil.

Dave the 4 screws referenced I believe are the 4 nuts under the plastic transistor cover caps on the back side of the driver, they loosen from thermal cyclic action and cause poor ground contiunuity to the ground of the transistor carried by studs/nuts. Remove the covers, to access them & leave off, I salvaged my PMD/FSD 3xs using the retorque method before giving up and moving on to the Heath remote mount. I ran a Beta mount on the Kennedy recommended location, it was better there, but not permanent fix, that is where the 3 retorque events happened. as detailed here http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/showthread.php?t=10778&highlight=points+ponder, so far the Heath mount has been operating trouble free since installed in Oct. 2004.
