: 8" wheels backspacing???
Leader_03 07-03-2005, 04:38 PM Im looking to get new wheels to replace the stockers and Ive decided to go with 16x8s for my 285 nittos. I need to know what backspacing will fit better. If I get Mickey Thompson Classic 2's they have a 4" backspacing. The Pro Comp Xtreme Alloy 1069's which look basically the same have a 4.5" backspacing and are also a little cheaper too. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

noreaster 07-03-2005, 04:55 PM Stock backspacing is 4.5", I have 4" bs don't go that way. The 4" will rub to much, go with 4.5 or more on the rims.
Leader_03 07-03-2005, 05:42 PM Thanks a lot. I guess Ill go with the Xtreme Alloys.
YellaCat 07-04-2005, 11:05 AM stock wheel is 6.5" wide with a 4.5" backspace
8 - 6.5 = 1.5 / 2 = .75 + 4.5 = 5.25" backspace to keep the factory offset with 8" wheels
I would think the closer you can get to 5.25" the better.
JRKRACE 07-04-2005, 03:24 PM Went from a 3 5/8 backspace to a 4.5 backspace on a 16 x 8 wheel and it made all the difference in the world. Less cranking of the t-bars and a lot less rubbing overall.
Drew&Corinn 07-04-2005, 03:48 PM Sorry to hijack this a little... I am not a new Duramax owner... just a new owner of a new truck that I have to set up as the first was purchased used and had been done by someone else... What is backspacing?
Drew
bs is the amount of offset from neutral or amount of wheel that is sitting inside (negative) or outside (positive) from the hub.
to fit 285 or bigger, you need a minim of 5" or you will have a lot of trimming, bending to do to minimize rubbing. the H2 wheels are popluar because they have 5.5" of backspacing, most of the wheel sitting inside the fender well making wheel clearnace easier. another thing to consider is the load on the steering components, the more wheel sitting inside the hub the less wear you will subsequently have on suspension/steering components.
mahalkita 07-05-2005, 01:52 AM On those small wheels you CANNOT increase backspacing endlessly or you will have problems with the brake assembly and UCA. This cannot be corrected with cutting etc. only with wheel spacers - not a nice idea. I have 5.75 bs on an 18 inch wheel and it just fits. 5.5 inch on a small 16 inch wheel might not fit. Better measure before buying!
Kiwi Ed 07-05-2005, 06:54 AM What is the width of a hummer H2 17" wheel
Leader_03 07-05-2005, 11:18 PM Well I ordered a set of Xtreme Alloys today. Ill just have to see how they fit. Thanks for all the info.
noreaster 07-05-2005, 11:25 PM Definatly post how they fit, I truly hate my 4's, set Im looking at is 4 5/8.
motovet 07-08-2005, 07:13 PM I went with some MKW's with 4 3/4" backspacing for my 285 Nittos and would not like any less. I wanted 5" but couldn't find any I liked for a reasonable price. With this set up the wheels are mostly within the flares and I had to trim a fair amount with the truck leveled,(T-bars).
Kiwi Ed 07-18-2005, 06:49 AM Trying to decide on wheels 16" or 17" - have studied most of the posts. Quite like American Eagle Alloy 186s. Trouble is 16" x 8" only have 4.25" BS and the 17" only come in 9" with 5" BS. Mickey Thompson Classic IIs look the same. Are these the same wheel rebranded? Same with Eagle 058 - are Pro Comp Extreme Alloys the same wheel rebranded? I see the H2 17" wheels with 5.5 BS are quite popular but I think 4.75 to 5" BS would be maximum for a 16" wheel. Any suggestions on other wheels would be appreciated.
Leader_03 07-18-2005, 09:16 PM Well here's what I found. Like I said earlier, I ordered the Pro Comp Xtreme Alloys. They are 16x8's with 4.5" backspacing. My tires are Nitto 285s and my truck is level (TBars). This combination does not fit. The tires hit hard on the plastic air dam. I used the information I found in the Do-it-yourself section of the forum to move my bumper out 1". That info was very helpful by the way. Any how, I trimmed my mud flaps a bit and used a couple zip ties and not they do not rub under any circumstances. The tires are just about even with the fender flares. IMO it drastically improved the looks of the truck. I have pics but dont know how to post them. Thanks for all the info.
Deadeye 07-19-2005, 02:39 PM Definatly post how they fit, I truly hate my 4's, set Im looking at is 4 5/8.
cheap solution: wheel spacers. a lot less expensive and plenty safe. I got 2" on my rear. no problems at all.
BansheeBruce 07-19-2005, 03:18 PM Does anyone know if 18x9 with a 4.5" BS would fit with no lift?
