: Pump-rub help needed.
KyleDD 04-20-2010, 10:05 AM I just learned what Pump-rub was last week (stupid me). I have not done anyting to my truck to address it and I want to before I have to buy a new transfer case. I spoke to the mechanic that has been doing a lot of work on my truck lately and he's never heard of it. He said he'd do the upgrad if I could get him a "Schematic". Anyone know where I could get one???
jettech 04-20-2010, 06:51 PM You need to remove and split the transfer case, remove the oem pump housing and install one of the upgraded housings. I like the merchantautomotive one the best, thats the one I went with. Whole thing took me about 4 hours on a lift. Merchants website has the directions avail for download. Use the forum search box, there's a crapload of info here already on it. Merchant is listed in the vendor section.
KyleDD 04-20-2010, 06:59 PM Thanks for the info, I'll get the directions off the Merchant site. I am planning to use their kit.
Tolliwacker 04-21-2010, 11:40 AM Man I just 2 part epoxied the hole, installed M/A upgrade and and going strong, been over 3 years and I don't know how many miles.....I wrote a do it yourself directions awhile back, and on page 70 is a link to M/A directions on spliting the case.
Might save you a few bucxks if you decide to do it yourself.

dnewton3 04-22-2010, 04:56 AM If you have a pump rub hole already, such as Tolli, I think the MA upgrade is the way to go; it's the "best" solution to a true worn-casing situation.
However, if you do it like me, (around 10k miles on the truck) the pump housing was still in perfect shape; zero damage. In this case, you can get less expensive fixes from Kennedy and Riverside, that work just as well, IMO.
My point is that if there is already damage done, the MA upgrade is probably a "better" choice due to it's design. But if you have no damage yet (my clip was still in place and intact) there was zero damage. My upgrade was preventative, not reactive. The "plate" style works very well for preventative measures, and at a heck of a lot less cost. It's also a tad easier, as there is less teardown involved (you don't have to take the pump apart).
The MA site has great DIY; that is what I used for directions.

I appreciate the info!
I'm not a DIY when it comes to stuff like that. I don't trust myself with stuff I know nothing about. It's got 110,000 mi. so chances are there is some wear.
fastrr 04-23-2010, 11:28 AM I just did the pump rub repair a couple of weeks ago. The truck had 106,00o miles on it and the spring clip was still in place. There were no signs of any wear. The job is fairly easy except for the snap ring being kind of a pain to get on and off. It took me about five hours, but I took my time. Even if though there were no signs of wear, I feel better about it not happening on the road.
