Hi All!
Long time reader, first time poster! I finally pulled the trigger and bought a 2010 GMC Crew SLT 4x4 tonight! I've owned Cummins and Powerstroke trucks prior and this is my first go round w/ the Isuzu Diesel. I must say I am liking the truck thus far!
Quick question: That funky musket looking tail pipe is about the ugliest thing I've ever seen. Does it serve a purpose for the DPF and Regen? It looks like about 2' up front the end of the tailpipe it's vented, allowing cool air to enter in. I'm guessing that is to allow some cooler air to enter the exhaust during Regen?
The musket has got to go. :) Am I making a mistake removing that and running pipe to a Chrome Turndown? (Full exhaust comes later, I'd like to keep my warranty at least for a week or two. :p:)

I dunno, I have a chrome tip on mine. Guess people need to respect the space and not lean on your tailpipe or get burned! It does actually get pretty hot without the musket thing. I walked by during regen and it was HOT! I just worry about a kid walking up and running into it or touching it, adults well you should know better!

search dpf delete. The tip cools the exhaust during regen to prevent hot gas from melting paint. if you want to do away with it efi live or edge race with an exhaust kit is the only way to go.

BTW fwiw Isuzu doesn't provide the duramax engine. Duramax is made in ohio at the duramax plant. Majority owner is gm. Isuzu involvement has lessened over the years. Last I read they had pulled out of the duramax joint venture or were planning to.

Isuzu just got the ball up and running to design a kick butt engine, then do the pass over to GM.

I shined my musket up with brasso. It is stainless...looks better but needs more or some different polish.

You'll find this with a little search function research, but the "short answer" for the "bugle pipe" is...
The DPF generates a lot of heat when it is in regen mode (1100 degrees). For exhaust of this temp (700 deg +) to exit out of a straight pipe was seen as hazardous to anything near the exhaust tip. The cuff draws in cooler air to reduce the average temp of exhaust leaving the exhaust "system".

Welcome!
I painted my musket Black. it looks cool and the paint is holding up pretty well; just put on my second coat of paint' Glad you like the truck. I had the 7.3l F250 before the GMC. My GMC is much quieter and a smoother driving truck for sure. Surprisingly, the F250 SD is customer rated one of the worse trucks on the road according to a Yahoo article I read recently. I think you made a good move buying a GMC this time around. My brother in-law sure appreciates it too since he works at the GM Truck assembly plant in Flint, MI.

stop at a big truck chrome shop and pick up a short 5" straight pipe and slide it over the musket. Looks great and doesn't cost muck.

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome and info!
I am thinking no DPF delete for me at least for a little while. (thats code for: the wife would kill me if I did something that voided my warranty this early on. :p:)
I think I'll make a trip in the near future to the local muffler shop. They've done custom work on other vehicles before and pretty handy. I think I can get them to remove that ugly musket and bend me up something that still has the air vents then dumps into a Big Chrome TurnDown.

You'll need that vent I think because the exhaust does get extremely HOT! Get us a photo...I bet it turns out nice.
