: How did you install your pyro thermocouple?
chevsforever 07-02-2005, 06:42 PM The 3 options I see are drill & tap the exhaust manifold,,very right but I would hate to crossthread or screw up the tapping process. Have a shop weld a threaded bushing into the pipe,,also right, but costs. Option 3 , the easy way out, drill a hole in the pipe and clamp the thermocouple in with a screw clamp. Autometer actually supplied the clamp set up. Just looking for feedback and a possible beating since I am leaning toward the clamp method. Thanks, Frank! :grd:
SmoknDmax 07-02-2005, 07:03 PM The best method is tapping the manifold since it is the only one that gives you the exhaust pre-turbo. The other two methods you mentioned are post-turbo temps.
If you are nervous about tapping and drilling the manifold yourself, try and find a member near where you live that has experience doing it.
I was nervous about doing it to my own truck, but if you take your time it actually isn't that hard.
Good Luck!
mannytranny 07-02-2005, 07:40 PM Drilled and clamped on the middle of the PS side manifold.
kbstinky 07-02-2005, 08:16 PM Put it in the exhaust pipe for my gauges.
Put the 2nd one in for the Edge w/Attitude.
Interesting to see the difference as you climb/descend.
Idle_Chatter 07-03-2005, 01:34 PM I installed the pyro for my Isspro gauge in the rear of the passenger manifold just forward of the rear flange. I installed the pyro for my Edge Attitude in the bottom of the driver's manifold just forward of the rear flange. Drilling and tapping the cast iron manifolds is very easy. Only problem I had on both installs was dropping my tap and losing it into the "fishmouth" in the frame on the pittman arm, which required a quick trip to Home Depot for another tap to finish the job!
Ben46a 07-03-2005, 03:30 PM Why not just hook the edge to the thremocouple for the isspro as well?
Idle_Chatter 07-03-2005, 04:44 PM Edge and Isspro use different probes and the Isspro uses an amplifier box to feed the gauge. There's a lot of of issue with thermocouples becoming inaccurate with changes in lead length or being hooked in parallel. Plus, it gives a backup system as well as a pyro in each manifold for observing the whole engine versus just four cylinders.
D/A Power 07-03-2005, 10:48 PM Why not just hook the edge to the thremocouple for the isspro as well?
Ben46a is right, and I believe you mentioned you had the Autometer gages. If so, the thermocouple can be used for both the Edge and gage. I verified with Edge that they use the same manufacturer for the thermocouple. Several people here have done it including myself and the accuracy is fine. I checked the operation of each separately and together and the readings were all the same.
And the other guys are right - The best method is pre-turbo using the drill and tap method. It is not nearly as hard as it is intimidating. Do a search to find the "Hoot Method" as it has pics and is very detailed.
Good Luck.

DMAXITOL 07-04-2005, 10:58 PM Did mine on the turbo down tube, pre- down pipe. I get the same read's as most of the post on this site. Thin wall metal, easy to drill and tap. No chips or broken taps to clutter ones mind!:exactly: Passenger side, behind trany dipstick.
BigStu128 07-05-2005, 10:57 AM Chevsforever, here is a suggestion for you, or anyone else, that is timid about drilling and tapping your exhaust manifold for a pyro.
I was playing around last weekend and found an old cast iron manifold off a 4-cyl gasser I helped a buddy swap out. Just for grins I pulled out my 1/2" drill and some bits and taps and drilled and tapped about 10 holes in the old manifold. After a few tries and one broken tap, I felt I was pretty good at tapping the iron and not messing the threads up. Any local junk yard should have something cheap and good enough to practice on. Just make sure it is iron and you are good to go.
Good luck...
kaiserrw 07-05-2005, 11:11 PM I used the "Hoot Method" last weekend to install mine. It worked like a breeze!
THANKS HOOT ! As BigStu suggested, if you have never tapped anything, get some metal plate or an old manifold and try it. Surprisingly with the Dmax running while drilling and tapping, I did not need any gloves because it's just not that hot. Do use goggles though because the cutting oil blowback can be messy.
McRat 07-05-2005, 11:16 PM I installed mine in the passenger's side, but it only reads 98.6 deg. Pissed the passenger off pretty good.

At least you know Kat doesn't have a fever.
I used the HOOT method. Worked like a charm.
McRat 07-06-2005, 12:45 PM Yeah, I did the Hoot Method too. Highly recommended.
chevsforever 07-07-2005, 12:28 AM You guys are awesome!! I didnt even have time to read Hoots method,,but will when I return from my trip. I can run a tap okay, so will try the right way vs the easy way ,,thanks for all the response and will keep my level at 1 for this trip,,but I bet I still pass a B** load of people with my Max!!LOL. Thanks guys, Frank. (Towin faster than I probably should):beerchug:
maxumus64 07-09-2005, 09:20 PM hoot method here also.
