When you do a panic stop, ( someone pulls out in front of you,) and you are hard on the brakes,(ABS engaged) will the transmission initiate a downshift?

Just curious..

I don't think it downshifts as agressively when it sees that the wheel speed is dropping rapidly like that. When it decides to downshift more is when it sees you are applying the brakes, and the wheel speed is not dropping, or still increasing.

I had this happen to me a few times with people pulling out onto the main road and not paying a bit of attention to me. I was traveling around 60MPH and slammed on the brakes, the ABS engaged, the truck slid a bit, but the tranny didn't do a thing as far as slowing me down.

Second time this happened I just slammed the shifter into first gear and that will shut you down pretty fast, just don't do it in rainy or icy conditions, because it will get the truck really squirrely and may spin you out.

The transmisison will not downshift during a panic stop as this could make the situation worse. It will maintain the current range.
