Anyone have any suggestion on when a good time to replace the fuel filter? I have a 2009 2500 LMM LTZ and I'm new to the diesel world. Also do you recommend only having it replaced by the dealer?

It reads out the filter life on the DIC. You should replace it when it reads close to 0% remaining life, or sooner if you feel your filter is clogging.

I do mine every 7500 miles, but I have an LB7. I'd probably do it every 8-10,000 on a newer Duramax.

if you use the same fuel station then maybe change it to see how dirty their fuel is after so many miles -- if it clean than you know you can go longer.

if your a person that gets fuel wherever , then maybe every other oil change ?

its much up to personal preferance i think !

its not that expensive to have a good piece of mind that the fuel filter is clean.

Also, do it yourself. The filter is only like $35. Get some on ebay and save. The dealer wanted to charge like $80, IIRC, for my truck when I first got it.

I change mine when the DIC tells me too. Had about 16k on the last one. I don't know how the DIC know when it is time but it must use sensors of some sort I have noticed when the light comes on you start to loose some top end.

just did mine today. i got about 20k on it, but it started throwing p1093 and limitinmg revs to 2000 rpm. couple of key cycles fixed that, but i opened the old filter today and it was BLACK. i meant to do it last oil change, but forgot and well, here we are today. so, i plan on every other oil change....

I change mine every 10,000. Very easy to do yourself and takes all of 15 minutes.

By from a vendor on here, follow the DIY thread here, take 15 min., feel good you did something yourself. Also, buy a WIF wrench, I used vice grips the first three times, just used WIF wrench this time, felt much easier doing, not likely to mess the plastic WIF sensor up. I do mine 7500-10K miles, usually falls around when stations switch from winter blend back to summer blend, also, beginning of camping season, end of camping season. Basically twice a year. Chris

I use the Merchant WIF wrench and am very careful with my WIF sensory.

I've thought about doing my own oil change but what do you do with all the oil? It's like doing 3-4 oil changes on a car. Where do you pick up the WIF wrench...the dealer?

Is there a reason to change early?

WIF wrench is for the fuel filter. The WIF (water in fuel) sensor is located at the bottom of the fuel filter. It has a couple wires with a pigtail on it. Dealer will have no idea more than likely what you are talking about. You can get one from Merchant Auto (believe they started the WIF wrench), PPE makes one. Any vendor on here sales them. I take my oil to AutoZone, pour it in the oil dumpster at the back of the store outside. I just pour what I take change into 1 gallon jugs, so I can tell exactly how much oil I may have burned since the last change. 10 quarts in, hopefully close to 10 quarts out. Chris

As far as how soon to change fuel filter, I notice a huge difference in performance when I change mine when the DIC says 50% fuel filter life. This time I let it get down to 25%, but I am doing my "spring maintanence" on my truck for camping that's coming up this year. Plus I get 95% of the diesel from one place, so it's a good way to see just how good the diesel is by cutting the filter apart. Chris

right-On. I'll have to check out my locate AutoZone and see if they have a drop off for oil I suspect that they do. I can see if you're going on a trip you don't want that filter clogging up on you. I'll get the wrench. Perhaps the Dealer/Customer relationship is overrated.

I think you can find it in your manual.

10-15k is the normal interval, but the new coalescer fuel filters that come on the trucks last up to twice as long as the old standard fuel filters. Here is a link to the filter that comes on the truck. Racor makes them for GM.

Just got mine on this weekend Nate, thanks! Fit great, no leaking, WIF wrench worked great as well. It'll be interesting to watch the Fuel Filter life % compared to the last 3 filters. Chris

Are the factory filters 10micron or 2micron? If they are 10 does anybody get 2 microns?

The Racor/GM factory fuel filters are 4 micron.
