I picked up a NAPA KB 1000psi tester gauge with glow plug adapter.
Figured I would compression test the motor before removing it from the van
so I could choose between getting the heads freshened up vs a complete rebuild.
I got a good video w/ sound of the lifter TICK at various speeds that I will post later.
Long ago the manager at GM DSU said he didn't want to replace my glow plugs because they will be swollen and impossible to remove. It was quite easy! Yes, the plugs were swollen. But you just gotta twist them and pull and they came out. AC Delco 9Gs. Hard to reach and hard to fit tools between the GP and the doghouse frame.
I did warm it up before starting the compression test.
Drivers side, back to font:
480 (I'm thinking, wow, that's awsome!)
480
460
360
Passenger side back to front:
320 (#8)
360
320 - GP oil fouled.
XXX - at this point the glow plug adapter gets stuck between the exhaust manifold and the block, an a place I can't see, nor can any tool or hand remove. STUCK. After an hour trying to retrieve, I gave up and decided to start teardown.
Anyway, 480 vs 320 is a big difference. I recall 20% delta from the highest indicates time for a rebuild. That's 33% :(
My coworker with a Suziki Sidekick got his checked recently and was 80psi on two, 160 on the other two, but still getting 27mpg.
So I'm tearing down the front, bag and tag all the parts & pieces.
Will post pix during the process.
