Hey there,
My friend has a good 4L60E with a broken case from a u-joint failure and a questionable 700R4 with unknown internals. He is wondering if he can put the 4L60E guts into the 700R4 case and if it would work. Any advice is appreciated!

The 700 and the 4L60E internals are the same but when you are done you will have a hydraulic 700 because you can not use the 4L60E valve body as the case is different.

The planet gears are the only thing the same.

Quick question on these two trannys. I know the 4l60E is electronic but is it a five speed? I have a 700R-4 in a sub and i love it but i am looking a project truck with a 6.2 in it and was wondering if the 4l60E would be a better choice. It would mainly just be a daily driver but occasional pulling of a trailer less than 6500#. Thanks in advance.

the 4L60E was the new name for the latest 700R4 models. had some upgrades as well as being elctronic controlled, but it still has only 4 forward gears, the 4th being overdrive.

Actually the 4L80E would be the better choice for durability, but if you go with the 4L60E you'll need a stand-alone controller, shift kit (better clutches), deep sump oil pan with provision for temp guage, and the biggest dang trans cooler you can fit on your truck. The reason I mention all this is if you're gonna go through the trouble of swapping all of this stuff out you might as well make sure you only have to do it once. One good thing about the 700R and the 4L60E is that they have a lower first gear (3.06) and a higher OD gear (.70) compared to the 4L80E which is 2.88 & .75.....I think. Oh one other thing, what rear end gear do you have? 3.73, 4.10, etc.
