ok ive been looking into the access door that is being sold but didnt like that it looked like a patch -- just stood out too much for me .

so i went and bought and aftermarlet fender liner $19 , heres the part number and what it looks like .

http://i265.photobucket.com/albums/ii201/dpwanton/ampartnumber.jpg

http://i265.photobucket.com/albums/ii201/dpwanton/amliner.jpg

my thoughts were to use the aftermarket liner as a backing plate -- so i cut out a piece from the aftermarket liner alittle bigger than i thought i would need -- just used scissors to cut it -- very easy.

http://i265.photobucket.com/albums/ii201/dpwanton/amcutout.jpg

set the piece of aftermarket liner that i cut out into my wheelwell to get an idea of how big i was gonna cut the factory liner. just used some tape so i had something to follow while cutting with a razor knife.

http://i265.photobucket.com/albums/ii201/dpwanton/linerdoor1.jpg

http://i265.photobucket.com/albums/ii201/dpwanton/linerdoor2.jpg

once i had the piece cut out i filed all the pieces and the hole in the liner so i wouldnt cut my hand when i wanted to change the filter or work in there.

http://i265.photobucket.com/albums/ii201/dpwanton/linerdoor3.jpg

http://i265.photobucket.com/albums/ii201/dpwanton/linerdoor4.jpg

http://i265.photobucket.com/albums/ii201/dpwanton/linerdoor5.jpg

then i taped the cut out onto the aftermarket piece so i could fit it up to make the door.
once i had it centered and where i wanted it , i used scissors to trim it up.

http://i265.photobucket.com/albums/ii201/dpwanton/linerdoor7.jpg

http://i265.photobucket.com/albums/ii201/dpwanton/linerdoor8.jpg

http://i265.photobucket.com/albums/ii201/dpwanton/linerdoor9.jpg

http://i265.photobucket.com/albums/ii201/dpwanton/linerdoor10.jpg

once i had the door trimmed up i taped it back in position so i could drill the holes for the clips that would be used to take the door on and off.

http://i265.photobucket.com/albums/ii201/dpwanton/linerdoor11.jpg

http://i265.photobucket.com/albums/ii201/dpwanton/linerdoor12.jpg

drilled the holes then put clips in place so nothing would move

http://i265.photobucket.com/albums/ii201/dpwanton/linerdoor14.jpg

http://i265.photobucket.com/albums/ii201/dpwanton/linerdoor13.jpg

took it all back apart and heres what it looks like

http://i265.photobucket.com/albums/ii201/dpwanton/linerdoor15.jpg

http://i265.photobucket.com/albums/ii201/dpwanton/linerdoor16.jpg

and now we can see well into the filter area

http://i265.photobucket.com/albums/ii201/dpwanton/linerdoor6.jpg

and here is what it looks like with the door back in without the tape ---
only thing left to do it glue the factory piece of liner to the aftermarket piece.

http://i265.photobucket.com/albums/ii201/dpwanton/linerdoor17.jpg

http://i265.photobucket.com/albums/ii201/dpwanton/linerdoor18.jpg

well thats it -- i think it came out great --- now if we can just get GM to do this from the factory -- lol :D

Very Nice Job !!, and good write up and pictures.

You have 8 tabs to remove. Thats about how many to remove the whole inner fender ??.

but i have a fender flare to take off including the whole liner.
and taking the chance of scratching the flare while its off.

this way is much easier ! :p:

other than the dam clips being so big -- you would not even know the door was there.

excellent job and nice solution to a issue that GM should have taken into consideration.

the main reason i used another fender liner was that i wanted the door to be bigger than the one that is sold and there are bends that i knew needed to be identical to the liner for a perfect fit.

ive had a few guys PM me about where to buy the aftermarket liner which is cheaper and doesnt really matter on quality because you are only using a piece of it and it wont be seen.

i am on the east coast but this company does the whole country -- keystone automotive 1-888-292-0144 ext 5045 and ask for Rich -- tell him Dave from cornells autobody refered you !! they will ship UPS but i do not know what they will charge you for the part and shipping. part # i had a picture of it on the first page. was for 07 and 08 i think. just ask Rich.

i purchase thousands of dollars in parts a month from them so i get stuff at lower than cost when its for me personally. thats why you tell Rich that I (Dave) sent you.

i also think that you could get away with a 2 or 3 inch wide strip of thin plastic that you could glue around the door you cut out and the drill like i did and it will be just as strong and look the same. just make sure to use a good quality plastic glue. doing it this way would just about cost you nothing!.

the clips you can get at any automotive parts store or stop at your local bodyshop or dealer .

i sure some could get pretty creative :D

Great job on the DIY model. It looks really nice and is functional. for anybody not wanting to spend the time the pre-made one is a nice alternative to this one. I will admist that this one looks more factory than the one I sell but most people don't make a habit of looking into others fenderwells so its isn't as much of a deal when it all gets dirty. Again great job on that very well done dwanton1!

Very nice. I wish I had done this rather than the pre-made ones. Looks like more room to access the filter.
