I am doing a 6.2L swap in my '71 burb, and I have a Radiator ?.... What is the minimum size radiator I will need so I will not have any overheating issues??? I have a radiator out of a CUCV, but is a big sucker. I also have the original radiator from the '71, but it a lot smaller than the CUCV model.

these motors have a lot of heat to expel. I'd use the one from the CUCV, or source a similar frame vehicle as your burb, and find something that fits.
I have an 862500 should be roughly the same as your CUCV, not sure where you'd fit that in a 71burb... if height's the issue, go with a rad from a 92, it's about 5" shorter. same width though. see if you can fit it in there.

i have a radiator that has a core size of 28 3/4 x 18 x 2 in. Would it be sufficient enough?

That is way too small for the 6.2. The closest thing that would fit might be from one of the big block trucks, which were available back then.

I had a 72 Suburban with a 396 in it, although it was labeled as a 400. Most people thought it was the small block 400, when in fact it was much more than that. It ran like a scalded dog too!

I think the 6.2 and the big block (Mark IV) motors put out about the same amount of heat. The radiator may or may not fit your existing radiator supports. The radiators back then were pretty thick (four core style). You may need to fab up your own mounts.

how many cores in the rads. thats gonna be most important. a good 3 core is a must. lots of guys have done swaps with smaller rads and done ok. then you'll need an auxileray oil cooler

I didn't have a prob finding a 6.2 rad in a junk yard. I don't know if there is a difference between a '71 rad support and later years. The rad supports on my '82 and my '84 have two bolt locations on the drivers side for the rad clamp, I guess for 2 different size rads depending on what engine it came with. Check your drivers side on the rad support maybe you have two locations also.

the rad for the 6.2 is a lot bigger.... alot bigger. there is a 4 core rad that was for a 67-72 truck, would this 4 core be enough. it is like 2 5/8 thick.

I'd say so.

I thought you just said at least a 3 core is a must?? There is a 4 core available for the 67-72 trucks....

i thought thats what i answered to, a 4 core. that would cool the best

Diaric means 4 would be even better than 3

what are the other dimensions?

So, let me be clear here...you think a four core from the 67-72 trucks would be sufficient? the dimensions are 16-1/8" H x 28-3/8" W x 2-5/8" D.

The 6.2 rad is 34" x 20 1/2" 3 core. That would be quite a difference in area but I think the additional core would make up for it.
If it were mine, and I had the 4 core, I would try it. especially if it bolted right in with no mods. I'd just keep an eye on it.
If I had the 6.2 rad, I would definitely mod the support to fit it.
Bigger is better!

a bit of the 6.2 rad hangs past the opening out of air flow. so size in the cooling flow is probably similiar.

I have a nice 4 core from the 67-72 years, so I think I will go with it. Do I need to run a oil cooler with it too? I know, you guys are thinking....DAMN, this guy doesn't know shit about Diesels.....but I am learning from you guys on here and I appreciate it.

yes, i would put in an oiil cooler

the reason a 6.2 needs so much darn cooling is because most of the combustion goes on inside the heads so alot of the heat gets soaked up into the heads then into the coolant. instead of a on a direct injected diesel most of the heat is blown out the exhaust then the rest finds its way into the head and block and pistons.

I have a 4 core big block radiator that I going to run for my '67. You will need the mounts and rubbers for one as well, because it won't fit the 6 cyl or SBC trucks. I also have a radiator from an 80's 6.2 truck, but it will not fit without a LOT of modification to the radiator support. After comparing the 2, the older 4 core radiator is a lot thicker than the 80's diesel radiator, and not a whole smaller. mal68ibu from the truck board is running a factory 4 core with a 6.5TD with a TH400, and he says his truck is staying plenty cool even while towing.

I have a 4 core for a 454 in my Apache and so far it doesnt run hot, but then again it hasnt been hot yet. I have electric fan for it but have only turned it on a few times when driving cause it just doesnt run hot enough.
