I am looking to upgrade my brakes and was wondering if anybody else has done this to their truck. I pull a large toy hauler that weighs between 15K and 16K depending on loading. There are a few long steep grades that I regularly descend and the brakes fade and the front end/pedal begins to shudder badly as I come to a stop at the light at the bottom. After they cool, the brake performance and feel returns to normal. What are my options on upgrading the pad/rotor/calipers?

Thanks in advance,

Why not look into an exhaust brake?

Why not look into an exhaust brake?

or the Banks speed brake

Is the truck slowing both? The truck brakes should only be slowing the truck, and the trailer brakes should only be slowing the trailer, neither should be slowing both. If both are fading, then I think the answer is an exhaust brake, or the Banks Speed Brake. If you are upgrading the truck brakes, then you will need to upgrade the trailer brakes, if both are adjusted and working properly that means both are fading, and compensating for the fade on just the truck is not ideal.

If all the brakes are working like they should (truck and trailer) then you will be able to stop with no problems or shutering. So first Inspect all your brakes and repair as needed.
If the calipers and/or pads not free to slide they will not brake as they should, making the other brakes work harder thus warping them.

Search ~ heymccall, the resident brake expert. I had a similar issue, read some heymccall posts, and gave my brakes a ~ heymccall tune up ~ and the truck and my 17,000 lb. trailer stop better than new.
