I just got a 2005 2500 crew cab long bed. I am looking to put an exhaust system on but I dont want it to be much louder than stock. Is this possible? images/smilies/help.gif

I've been reading a lot here on this subject. It seems general concensus is that if you get a 4" cat back system, you'll lower your EGT's, possibly improve your mileage slightly (1 mpg or so) and stay nearly as quiet as stock.

You will have your choice of aluminized, 409 or 304 stainless. Prices will range from just over $300 to almost $1,000, depending on what you get and if you want the down pipe also. Good luck. Aren't these trucks fun to drive on the road!!!!!

What are EGT's? As you can see I am new to diesels but I love it..

EGT's.. exhaust gas temperatures. Your turbo is driven by exhaust so the lower the temp the better. Getting a free flowing system helps a bunch with this. These new motors aren't really loud at all with free flowing exhaust. If you put the same system on the previous Duramax, an LB7, it will be very very loud!

good luck.

I put on the MBRP 4" cat back on my 05' and it is noticeably louder. I like the way it sounds, has a big block sound in the cab and more rumble and turbo whine out the back. Don't have gauges, so can't give you any info on EGT reduction.

aquamanjr,

With the 2004.5 and up Duramax if you pull the converter you'll get a check engine light in most cases, so we sell the MBRP systems as cat back for those trucks and it keeps the sound level mostly stock except when you nail the throttle, then you get a nice deep tone/rumble etc. If you decide to get the cat test pipe you'll also need to get the "finger and EGR block off plate. Do a search here and you'll get tons of info. Then it will really liven up the exhaust note as well.

Call us if you have any questions etc, we have all the MBRP aluminized, 409 and 304 stainless systems in duals and singles etc.

AquamanJr,

There have been several posts stating that the TTS system is close to the factory noise level. Here is a thread where Diesel Tech, who is the TTS vendor, comments on the noise level:

AquamanJr,

I put a TTS cat-back system on my truck last week. I was looking for a quiet system with no drone. This system is STOCK QUIET with absolutley no drone. I'm extremely happy with the TTS system and would recommend it to anyone looking for a quiet ride.

For me stock is NOT quiet at all! I have a drone between 1600...1900 RPM with my stock system. Before or after that RPM its quiet. Quiet as stock is still not good enough for me. I am hoping to eliminate that drone by replacing the cat with the front pipe from MBRP and go from there.

Good luck to you manhalkita. Hope you find something that works for you. The TTS works for me just fine.
