: Best Size Tire For H2 Wheels
FAST380 06-30-2005, 12:28 PM I have been reading about the H2 wheels for a while, I finally got a pair last night, was wondering what was the best size tire to run, I have an '05 CC, 4x4, short box. Here is some of my needs, in random order
1. Performance
2. gas mileage
3. no rubbing
4. looks
I am thinking about a 305/70/17 but would be curious if anybody would recommend different, and why.
Thanks Scott
tbalz 06-30-2005, 01:23 PM I have H2's with 285/70/17 and had to do a little trimming on the front of the plastic inner fender wells. I only cranked my torsion bars to raise the front end about .75". They rub every now and then. I think they are rubbing on the back side of the fender wells when they do rub.
I have BFG All-Terrain A/T KO's and they are the best damn tire ever (as far as the condions here in the Northeast go). They are great in mud, sand, snow, and ice, but I do have stone chips on my lower doors because those suckers pick up some bigun's and let 'em loose at 40mph
I did not notice any mileage change with them
They look great as well, especially with the Chevy center caps installed.
Tamale 06-30-2005, 01:26 PM how many cranks would .75" be tbalz?
TheMonkey 06-30-2005, 01:45 PM i think 285 would be a fine size.
i am going with 265/70/17 because of mileage and better heavy towing. but the 285 are going to look much better. try to keep your torsion cranking to a minimum.
FAST380 06-30-2005, 01:59 PM it appears that the 305 is the same height and an inch wider than the 285, I am starting to lean towards the 285, I wonder if you would even notice the width difference.
TheMonkey 06-30-2005, 02:19 PM why would 305/70/17 be the same height as 285/70/17? seems that it would be proportionally taller?
FAST380 06-30-2005, 09:41 PM I can't seem to find a company that makes both, the ProComp 305/70/17 is 32.9 inch's tall, the BFgoodrich 285/70/17 is 32.8 inch's tall, pretty darn close. It seems not to many company's make the 305 in a 17" tire.
duramaxedout 06-30-2005, 11:05 PM Do not go with the Pro-Junk's, I have 30K on mine and they are Censored UP!! I have the 33 12.50. 17's and I wouldn't go any smaller on the H2's if you do any 4x4'ing as the sidewall is very short. I think you can order the BFG's in the 305's. You can get the Goodyear MTR's in a 305 at Sam's club for $228 a tire, you won't get as many miles out of them as the BFG's but it depends on how you use your truck. Any of these will rub, but turning the T-Bars and trimming the air damm beats looking at those sorry llittle 245 donuts!!
tbalz 07-01-2005, 01:13 PM Tamale,
I do not remember exactly, but maybe 2-3 turns.

FAST380 07-02-2005, 11:44 AM Thanks for your input, I picked up a set of new take off H2 wheels and tires, chrome off of a '05 Hummer for $700. Was leaning towards the 285's because I wanted no real issue's, the truck only has 600 miles on it. I have an old buddy that runs a tire shop, went by to talk to him, as I walk in, there is a set of 285/70/17 BFG's sitting there, never figured he would have them in stock. Long story short, he put them on right then, traded me the H2 tires, my stock junk, for the new tires, mount ballence, align (because I adjusted the bars up) the whole bit, straight across trade. I am pretty much loving it, new tires and wheels, and it only cost me 700 bucks. And I have to say I really like the look.
One side note, the '05 chevy caps don't fit the H2 wheels, he gave me a set of older center caps, not sure what year, very little difference, but enough to make them fit.
Drew&Corinn 07-03-2005, 03:28 AM Does anyone have an idea as to if there is an E-range tire that will fit on the H2 wheels without any serious modifications... I want the truck to look good without compromising my towing ability. I am currently running 275/65/16 Coopers.

Are your Coopers E load range at 275/65/16? I am running 265/75/16 E Revos. I am not as in love with these tires as others on this forum. The biggest complaint being how bad they throw stones. They do look better but the increase in diameter from stock tire size costs me a 100 degrees egt. (Pulling my 5er on the same roads at equal outside temps the egts are consistently a 100 degrees higher with the bigger tires.) If I could get 275/65/16 in E load range that would be my next tire. This should be the same outside diameter as a 245/75/16. I personally will not consider a tire less than E for towing. I have seen too many people on the side of the road with blown tires.
Explorer Pro Comp Xtreme A/T
305/65/R17 E Rated.....these are about half inch taller than the 285/70
I am researching these right now...I want H2 rims and I think this might be the tire I go with.
Drew&Corinn 07-06-2005, 03:59 AM Yup the coopers are what I have and they work great... I am hopin to be as happy with something else and am trying to do the same as bobo. What have others said about the explorer comp Xtreme A/T?
And JOJO where would you buy this tire?
the BFGs should have close to the same weight capacity as many load range Es, only 6 ply versus 10 ply. I have not had any towing issues with the BFGs
Drew&Corinn 07-08-2005, 04:11 AM OK... Off subject but I need to find some GMC caps for these H2 wheels... Any ideas?

FAST380 07-14-2005, 12:34 PM So I ended up going with the 285/70/17's, really like it, thought about the 305 but I wanted minimal rubbing, and wanted to not hurt the performance as much as possible. Very, very little rubbing, a couple wire tie's and trim the front skirt was all it took, from a side view you can't even tell I trimed the front skirt, I just trimmed the leading edge.
Very happy with the look, it is the way the truck should come from the factory, just a clean, mellow look, tires don't stick out.
Cranked the TB's about 8 turns
FAST380 07-14-2005, 12:36 PM one more thing, the '05 Chevrolet center cap doesn't fit the H2 wheels, I had to get a older set of center caps, my buddy had a couple of sets at the tire shop where I got the tires.

I guess I'll find out soon enough as I'll be picking up my H2's next weekend, but are you saying your center caps off of the '05 aluminum wheels do not fit? I have heard the cap from the steel wheels will not fit.
Edit: I think I can see in your "night" photo you had the steel wheels........
