: What benefit is the straight pipe?

I have a mostly stock LB7. I have 285/75/16's and Hypertech (as noted in the sig). What benefit does adding a straight pipe? I have seen several people state it is the only mod they have done. If I don't do anything else to the truck is it worth getting the straight pipe?

Thanks in advance.

First question: do you tow with the truck? If so, being straightpiped would reduce EGT's (better for the turbo) If you don't tow much, I would say deleting the muffler would just add sound more than anything. This is assuming you do not have a cat in the frontpipe.

I do tow a 4,000# trailer from time to time. I DO NOT have a CAT and the exhaust is stock. I tow in Level 2 (65 hp).

PS. I don't want my truck any louder than it is!

I love mine being straight piped. Nice rumble to it. It did drop my EGTs down. I have had numerous compliments about the sound. When I go WOT it is NICE.

If you do not want it any louder than it is, I would say...

leave it alone!:exactly:

Want to be careful, local and state law enforcement may have something to say about loud exhaust. Some call it noise.

My LB7 is only loud when you want it to be. At WOT it makes dogs howl in the next county. Then theres the turbo "whoosh" that was barely audible with the muffler. $42 and egt's are approx 200 degrees lower at 70 mph. Have it removed but keep your old muffler in case you hate it, it can be reinstalled. Somewhere on here theres a short video of a straightpiped 6.6. I listened to it twice and called my muffler guy.

I don't think deleting the pipe on my LB7 really made it much louder, more so just changed the tone to a little deeper note. I am completely stock otherwise and don't have an EGT probe, so can't comment on that. Turbo spools maybe a hair faster, but not enough to be real noticeable. I pick up a little drone at 75+ mph, but no drone at lower rpms.

I have been inspected 2 years in a row in Austin without a problem. As far as the noise, it is like anything else, use in moderation. I don't run WOT all the time, but it is there when I want to. Most of the ricers with thumpers (bass cannons) are much louder than my exhaust. ;)

Well when I was installing my exhaust last night.
I turned on the car before I installed the muffler and the end pipe and it wasn't that loud at all.
the small import cars around here are 10 times louder.

Yes -- if you don't want it louder don't do it. However, it's not annoying by anymeans. I got rid of the AFE stage 2 because it was annoying as anything with that turbo whine. I wanted to die...

I'll go to court if I get a ticket. I like it loud but the Harley riders around here are very inconsiderate. Harley's are meant to be loud but all of these Harley riding bada$$ wanna be's feel the need to make noise all the time.

what can I use in place of the muffler?

I've seen a piece of flex pipe used and then two band clamps., others have made a custom piece and again band clamped it in place. So just weld the angles for the custom pipe, but if you could get it mandrel bent, that would be best. However you do it, it works. The custom ones usually look better, but the flex pipe is probably easiest and just as functional.

I went with flex pipe because it was cheap (I didn't want to spend a lot without knowing I would like it), but I am not real thrilled with the band clamp concept. I think it will soon get welded up permanently.

Can anyone with EGT verify the difference from stock to straight exhaust?

I posted an excerpt from the Txdot code last year that reads that a turbo is considered a "muffler". I'll keep it this till it doesn't pass inspection.;)

150-200 deg F. was my result.

What additional benefits would you get if you also replaced the Front Pipe? Do you need an entirely new exhaust system to do this? Can you replace both the front pipe and the muffler with a straight pipe and leave the rest of the system alone?

By the way, I think this is in the wrong forum - sorry!

what can I use in place of the muffler? Any exhaust shop can bend and weld in a piece. Some have to use 3" pipe and expand it to 3.5" as most shops dont have dies large enough to bend the larger pipe. I wouldnt use flex pipe on a 30-40k truck. My local shop charged $42 to perform the ectomy. Or if youre handy you could cut out your muffler and have the shop bend a piece accordingly and weld it in yourself for 10-15 dollars.

I don't think there is anything wrong in using the stainless steel flex pipe...We get over 500,000 miles from it on our Kenworths

That's true, it's hard to find a place that will make a 5" pipe, then expand it to 5" ID
