Well with my IC in route now i'm getting fairly excited here with holidays just around the corner, hope its here before i leave.

Anyways i thought i'd let you guy's know where i'll be heading (approximately anyways) so if anyone was interested in meeting up on the way it would be fun to chat or have a beer.

We will be heading out of Trochu with trailer in tow and are undecided on heading through Jasper or Banff, one or the other anyways, over to Kamloops BC and up to 100 Mile House area for some camping on July 9th. We will be around 100 Mile for about 7 days and then down hiway 97 past Hells Gate through Hope, down to Vancouver and south to I-5, down to Portland area and across to the 101, south to at least Paul and his Ox and then not to sure from there. Probably head over to Yellowstone but we'll plan as we go.

I'll have my computer and scanner with me of course so if anyone on the way is in need let me know on here or through my email.

The only way you'll tell i'm coming now is by the whistle as the bark has been silenced a fair bit.

I'll be updating this thread as we travel as long as i can get internet service. :D

Hey CR, got a WiFi card for your computer? You would not belive the number of open hot-spots there are out there. Most hotels that advertise high-speed internet use WiFi to do it, and very few regulate access. I have gotten good signals in the parking lots of quite a few.

Just something to consider, Good luck on your trip!

My hoods also going to be gettin shoved up someones *ss, its already pulling apart and no longer fits correct!

SE Texas? Now that would be a drive...

Thanks guys, whats a WiFi card?

WiFi is a short range wireless network. We have it here in the office. I can hit the office net with my laptop anywhere in the building. even in the bathroom -:t

It doesnt require any kinds of fees or anything as long as you can hit an open network conencted to the internet (AKA a 'Hotspot'). Many restraunts offer free WiFi Access. Hell, i think even some mcdonalds offer it now. Flying J truck stops offer it for a nominal hourly fee (like a buck or two). And like I said, Hotels didnt' want the expense or running copper wires for the high-speed internet, so the just put out a few wifi hubs and if you have a card, your in. I'd say maybe 80% of hotels with wifi have open to the public hotspots.

Here is an article on the technoloy, its a little biased towards the hardware end of it, but it gives a decent explanation on how it works and how to use it.

That means it will look like my hood, Flat Black on a white truck. Just glad I was able to recover it from the "painter" in one piece. He only had it 4 weeks and 1100 miles.

11:00 pm

Made a 300 km trip so far today and sitting east of Edson, a fast run without the trailer produced max IAT's of 96F. Since loaded and hauling max IAT's were 136F, i'm still able to bury the EGT's, hit 1300F on a hard pull and i'm only running 14 PSI max post IC, i may crank it up tomorrow and hopfully not blow off a hose. I'm still leaving a heavy trail of black smoke when on the throttle, apparently 92m is just too much for the stock compression as i see it, maybe the new turbo???? TDG, will help that out some...

Should make Horse Lake late tomorrow night and be hanging around there for a week or so. Yak at ya'll later... (ice is melting in my whiskey)...

How is your fuel economy towing? How are your water temps doing? Have a good trip

Mileage on first check was about 8.5 mpg (Canadian). All temps were doing great and then that annoying lub/slight miss i've always said i had decided to show its ugly face.....BANG!!!!! now i'm going nowwhere fast. Had to hook the trailer to get it another hour to the campground and towed the truck to barrier. She blew up on the Little Fort hill about 1/2 way up, 11+ Km hill, 8% grade, no codes! Dunno what happened but it aint going nowhere under its own power! Guessing either a piston fired off the wrist pin into the head or turned a bearing and threw a rod. I was recording at the time with the scanner, haven't looked at the file yet. Anyone's help would be appreciated in getting a new engine in.

07-10-2005, 02:05 PM
Engine noise levels got louder about 1 hour before that, i was sure i could here a light knock in the engine and the oil pressure looked like it had dropped a tiny bit but wasn't 100% sure. My manual WG control broke 3 times on the trip but that was nothing, simply back out of it and cruise to the next pull-off and fix in 5 minutes. Nothing threw the block or pan, no oil on the ground. Trucks 2 hours from me now.

Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today, to remember and engine . . .
an engine that we have all admired . . .
an engine that has endured more than any other engine has . . .
an engine that now resides in that great big truck stop in the sky now. . .
May she always be remembered fondly.

Will stud girdle work in conjuction with splayed mains without modifications? Just wonder if double protection is worth it as i don't know which way to go, leaning towards splayed though as DAS offers that with there rebuild?

quantum mechanic
07-10-2005, 03:37 PM
If you've got the money to put an '01 or newer block with 18:1, splayed mains or girdled, it will be better suited for all that fuel and the extra boost you will eventually run. Bummer about the engine but I think you saw it coming too.

CanadianRigger
07-10-2005, 10:45 PM
27 PSI(a) = 13 psi

wild willy
07-11-2005, 02:06 AM
CR, sorry to see your rig down like that. Kinda gives a guy second thoughts with the mods. I agree with the 27# (A) being 13+# (G). "A" is for absolute (and that's not Vodka)(darn it) and "G" is for gage. The difference being the ambient barimetric pressure, about 14.75 pounds at sea level. Schools out now. So it sounds like a rod or main bearing went south on you with the lose of oil pressure. Be interesting to know with the boost at 13, if it was a wrist pin. I have a slight miss every once in awhile too. GM doesn't hear it but it is there. Thought that the new PMD Isolator would fix it but no deal. Good luck on the repairs.

Firefighter
07-11-2005, 10:54 AM
Ok, I'm a bit confused here. 27psi absolute and 13 psi gage? I take it you don't mean what we see in the cab staring at our pillar pod. At least I hope that is what you are saying.

CanadianRigger
07-11-2005, 01:01 PM
Cab gage reads normal PSI, if you ad 14 you get absolute pressure which is atmosphere, we live in 14 PSI (+/-) of a pressure bubble around the earth. My boost gauge reads normal as yours, my scanner takes in account for atmosphere.

Truck will be towed to DAS shop and be there first thing Tues morning for tear down, it will be a complete engine with probably a new hummer block, 18:1's, gear set, my HO pump, may use the old heads if there ok, i have specified already to DAS that i want the hottest 6.5 in North America!!:ro)

Bummer on the timing of losing the motor. But as was mentioned, you saw it coming. Good luck with the new motor, it will be cool to see/read about the buildup. :grd::grd:

New engine is on order, i haven't heard what failed yet but there's a brand spanking new high strength hummer block coming, block will be sent out for splayed mains and were dropping in Mahle 18:1's from Kennedy i think, low temp fan clutch, gear set, 92mm pump and other mods. Here i sit for another 2 weeks at least.

Hey CR, the rain chased me away from Green Lake... home now. I have a DAS motor in my truck, good guys to deal with. I drive by their shop often...

CanadianRigger
07-17-2005, 12:06 PM
The guys at DAS seem pretty good to deal with as you say and pretty knowledgable on the 6.5, that would be the reason i chose them and had looked into them before i ever went on holidays in case something like this happened.

Anyone that wants to visit i'm still on horse lake at the Cariboo Bonanza Resort, i have my scanner with me but thats about it.

As to getting it dyno-ed, i'm not sure they have that option but should check into it on monday.

For the time being, I didn't want to crater a test turbo into my new engine. Once TDG gets the new turbo tested i'll probably swap it out.... but now you have me thinking of what DAS has on hand???

Chicago TDP
08-03-2005, 02:11 PM
Its easy to swap turbos, just need a universal downpipe flange. That is all. What is TDG building? Let me now a little info, i am getting ready to do a lot of R&D on my turbo setup.

I thought i'd do a little update.

92mm IP sent back to XXXXXXXX Diesel Service in Ontario for warranty due to very high C-times. The pump arrived with a broke housing from UPS around July 25th in Ontario and i was informed a replacement pump was shipped out the same day back to DAS. (the pump was insured when sent & besides its warranty right?)

Monday August 8th 10:00 a.m. I was informed by DAS the pump wasn't even shipped to them??? If i wanted another pump i'd have to pay for it :wtf1: :rippedhan .

The engine should have been in and running a week ago, it was ready and waiting for a pump. I tell DAS to pay for the pump and shipping and we'll deal with it later. Pump arrives Aug 10th no problem.

As i pick my skull fragments out of the ceiling i'm really wondering what the hell is going on and contact Tex about this for the second or third time? He's dumbfounded that the pump wasn't shipped when said, as far as he knows it went out. Apparently the higher powers to be in the shop didn't figure so and want to collect original pump costs (paid long ago), insurance costs (insured for $1500 i think) and charge for another pump to boot!!!

I am about as pissed off as one can be now at the shop where TDG works but let me get one thing straight, after the discussions with Tex i believe he knew nothing of this and don't lay any blame on him but would highly recommend not doing business with the shop he works in, especially when it comes to warranty!!!

Now that the pump has finally got to DAS the truck should be sitting on the dyno tomorrow afternoon to get some numbers to the wheels and if all goes well i'll be picking it up after that.

As to the modified GM-8 turbo it was apparently shipped at one time also... then it was found out later it wasn't but in the meantime i had decided not to put on a trial turbo in case it blows apart into a $15 g's engine for safety reasons.

Someone mentioned starting a thread for shops to avoid, CAN WE START ONE NOW? :banghead:

I feel like i'm being royaly :sheephump

No offence to DAS whatsoever, they're doing a :thumb: job

Chicago TDP
08-10-2005, 02:33 PM
So what has been modified on the GM8? What is so special about it? New exhuast side or what?
