Ok, so I have now changed the oil on my new truck twice and was extremely disapointed in the aftermarket replacement filters for the truck. I noted that my first change, the filters I found for it were shorter by about 1/4" and about that much smaller around. Seems to me that replacements should be the same in dimension, even though I know they sometimes use one filter for several different applications because the thread pattern and rough deminsions are the same.

However, my Quad A personality forced me to look for an alternative.....and I found one. So I thought I would share my findings with you all.

IN parts applications manuals, all replacement filters come up the same as the one I didn't like as far as demisions, so I took the factory filter part number to my sources and found an ACDelco replacement which matches up perfectly with the factory filter. (Part Number PF2232 or 88917036). What made the choice to go this route even easier for me was the comparison to the other replacement filters I found. This filter has more filtering surface than any other filter I found (Yes I cut them open guys). I figure with 10qts of oil being filtered, the more filter the better.

Anyway, as a side note, I also note a slight increase in oil pressure, mind you I used the word slight. maybe 3 to 5 lbs at best. Now be warned this filter is pricey...I paid $12.00 for it, but to me it's worth it.

What I find truely funny about the search process is that even the ACDelco application book does not show this as an option for the truck, but if you cross-reffrence the factory filter part number (O.E. Filter Number), this is what it is.

Just thought you all would kike to know.

Am I missing something here? My factory filter IS PF2232. I buy my replacements from Eric @ www.gmdieseltech.com.

I use the Mobil1 Filter... I think it's actually a bit cheaper than the PF2232.

John is right. The local outfit where I buy my filters has both brands on display. Although more expensive, the ACDelco is clearly the better filter. Even without cutting it apart you can see the difference in quality.

You guys should do a bit of searching on oil filtes before you start crowing about which one is better.

My local Advance Auto and Auto Zone have the ACDelco pf2232 Duragard for $7.99. I was impressed.

CBR,
i read your post a couple times and still am unsure... what kind of filter did you find? why pay more for a different kind of filter when the AC filter is cheaper?

I agree with the filter needing to be the same diameter as the outer ring is where the rubber seal is.

A search only confirms what we are saying.

I hate it when the conversion loses old posts. jbplock published data on oil filters.
Mobil 1 was best, followed by Baldwin 1441. I forget if the ACDelco was third or
fourth, edged out by one from Champion Labs. I will learn to archive posts on
dead trees.

found the post on the mobil 1 filter http://dieselplace.com/forum/showthread.php?t=13090&page=2&highlight=jbplock+%22mobil+oil+filter%22

and found the other one http://dieselplace.com/forum/showthread.php?t=2525&highlight=jbplock+%22Baldwin%22

IMHO you can't go wrong with the factory 2232 AC. I also can't understand why anybody's truck came with anything BUT the AC... I've been paying right at $10 for it at either Wally world, Farm & Fleet or the hardware store.

Whew...

I didn't think I would raise this much issues with people, I guess I better clairify what I meant to get across.

In my area, every filter which I found based on applications data at aftermarket outlets (autozone, napa, carquest, walmart, etc..) would show a filter which was not exactly the same size as the factory filter I removed. I went to a wholesale parts house which services local service facilities (including dealers) and with their help looked at several manafuractures filters (but not all), BY NO MEANS was this post intended to imply this was the best filter out there (like anything else, best is subject to the person viewing the data), I never stated it was the best out there, I only said it was a match to the factory O.E. filter my truck was delivered with and had more filtering surface that others I found.

My only reason for this post was that in my area, no applications manual showed this as the appropriate filter for our engines and I thought if the problem was similar for others out there you might like the info. If my post implied something different, my bad.

Geesh, makes you not want to post any information.......

I can probably get this filter locally here for about $9. wholesale, but retail is over $12. Maybe I get together with you and have you buy a couple of cases and ship them to me!

You all have to remember, I live in califorina, the most expensive nation in the world to live . :muahaha: (at least that what we think!!!;) )

Well, it was a little hard to tell what you were getting at. It sounds like you were looking for a filter that matched the physical size of the OEM filter. Your reasoning seemed to be that since the other filters were smaller that they would not filter as well as the oem since the filter media surface was smaller.

Well, there are more factors to filter efficiency that just media area. The filtering ability of that media is important as well. So, the way I see it, basing the ability of a filter to filter on the physical size of the filter is not a good way to chose a filter.

I use the Mobil 1 M1-303 filter. It filters down to 2 microns. There were a lot of discussions a while ago regarding oil filters and this filter was generally regarded as being one of the best.

Is the M1-303 the part number for the Mobil 1 filter????

What I don't understand is why people complain over a $9-$12 filter or Oil for that matter....

Folks pay $35,000 for a truck then complain about $10 in a filter!!! You do get what you pay for in most cases!!!

I for instance run Amsoil Heavy Duty Diesel/Marine 15w-40 Sunthetic Oil and have since day one.. I change my oil at 3,500 mi. regardless of the Syntetic reccomendation for 7,000 mi.. Alot of my buddies run Rotella and look at me like a "Re-Re" for running my HIGH DOLLAR OIL and my Non-Fram crappy-a$$ed filters...

I just don't get why people wouldn't want the piee of mind of knowing they are protecting thier investment...

ANYWAY, I am interested in trying the Mobil 1 filters but getting them around my neck of the woods is going to be hard to do...

SO, is that Part number the number for a Modil 1 for a LLY????

Did you look at Fleetguard (my favorite aftermarket), Baldwin, and Wix filters? Typically found in heavy truck shops. I have a new LLY I have yet to change the oil but I buy parts by the boxful and prefer not to buy from the dealer since I get them delivered.

I must say, those are ones I did not find in my area, I am sure they are available, just not easily.

Mobil1-303 at 5 microns is about the best you can do and I usually use one but the last oil change I used the GM filter just because it was my back up and I wanted to replace it with the Mobil1.

I also use the Mobil full-flow filter, but the Fleetguard or Donaldson filters with synthetic media should be excellent filters for this application as well.

For what it's worth, I've always been happy with Napa Gold filters, but I'm not sure how they are for this application.

I came across this site a while back. Maybe some helpful information here. This guy cut up a bunch of filters.

The last I read I think he was going to cut more filters when he got time/money.

When your truck comes from the factory it has a black ac delco filter, but you go to buy one and their blue, any difference???..not sure, but I think Eric sells the black ones if that what you really want. Personally I trust any of the Big name brands...Wix, Delco, Mobil.

A 3510 BOSCH will work in a pinch and about the same price with some pressure increase by design

jholly,

Thanks for reviving those threads. Thats great info I wish I had before I opened my big trap. When at the store I was comparing the ACDelco to a cheap Fram. Now that I know the Mobil is out there I will seek it out.

Big Will 21, If you are using Amsoil 15w40 why not use Amsoil's Super duty filter SDF52. I am installing Amsoil's remote full flow and bypass filters on my 05. i will post pictures when finished.

So I was all hot-to-trot after reading this thread and headed down to the local NAPA parts store to return the couple of Napa Gold (Wix) oil filters I had bought, and pick up a Mobil 1 filter. We'll no prob. returning the old ones and that store didn't have the Mobil filters, so off to the next one... Well three parts stores later and even trying a Target, I ended up going back to NAPA and buying one of the Gold filters (again) -- I need to change the oil in the next few days...

So where are you guys getting the Mobil 1 filters at? And while we're at it, I stopped in to a local GM dealer and picked up a couple Ally filters and a fuel filter too -- OUCH! they are expensive! Where are you getting your other filters, one of our site sponsors, perhaps??

Dan Diesel,

AutoZone sells the Mobil 1 303 for around $11

Get the fuel filters from one of the site vendors (Kennedy, GMDieselTech, Lube Specialist. etc). They all are around the same price of about $27. The brand name on the filter can may between the vendors, but they are all the same filter made by Racor.

GMDieselTech has the Allison filter for, I think, around $9. This is a lot cheaper than the dealer price of around 26 bucks. You can also get them at a local Allison dealer for around $9. Some of the other site vendors may also stock the Allison filter.

Every parts store sells air filters, but stick with the AC Delco for the Duramax. It is noticably superior to the others. GMDieselTech sells the AC Delco.
