Hey guys I need a little help. My dad owns a 2001 powerstroke 40,000 miles. About a month ago I was behind him a nd I saw a little puff of white smoke. Took it to the dealer and they said they could not fin anything. Then the service guy asked my dad what oil he put in it. Then the light wen't off. When he changed the oil in his girlfriends gasser he changed the oil in his truck SAME OIL 10/30. When he told the swervice guy this they said he used the wrong oil and it needs to be 15/40. So they changed the oil right there.
I saw him the other day and he said everyonce in a while he will get a white puff.
Does anybody know what this could be.
The water level is the same and so is the oil.
I'm hoping to figure this out before it goes back into the shop so I can tell the tech what to look for.
Did the different oil cause this.

not likely, lots of variables. how long was the oil in, how much pulling was done with the oil etc. you must use a good diesel oil with proper rating check owners manual when in doubt.

There was 5000 miles on the oil pulling a 2 place horse trailer maybe 4 times. I was told maybe a bad injector but my dad says the truck runs the same.
Did the 10/30 weight oil cause some internal damage. Just trying to figure this out so when he takes it back in the dealer doesn't say UHHHH.
Truck is still under warranty.

the dealer has an out on the engine warranty imo. must use a diesel rated oil. the facts maybe that the oil used had good enough properties to lub a diesel, look at its rating onthe can, acheck with manual. can tell you the story. good luck. nelson

I would think it's more of a fuel problem. Run a coupe of tanks with Stanadyne Blue label addative. Also, you should try Amsoil 5-30 Series 3000 for a change and see if it clears up.
