: 6.2/6.5 differences?
dazedandconfused 03-29-2010, 08:46 PM Okay I have a few 6.5 diesels laying around and a couple 6.2's. What are the differences in the motors? Bores are different in block I think? Are the heads different on them. The 6.2 is a late model I was told but I'm going to try and find some casting numbers on the block when I get it on the stand. I'm wanting to build a stout 18.1 turbo motor out of the ones I've got. I tried to do a search but it keeps saying topic not specific enough.
4320Diesel 03-29-2010, 08:49 PM main difference is the displacement. other differences are: turbocharger on the 6.5, 1994+ 6.5's have the DS4 electronic ip, the 6.5 heads have a different injector angle to allow for the turbo manifold to fit(from what ive read), they have short injectors, a gear reduction starter, a serpentine accessory drive. thats all that i can think of off the top of my head. im sure someone else will add to the list.
Joeairforce 03-29-2010, 08:54 PM Not all 6.5's had turbos brent......
dazedandconfused 03-29-2010, 08:56 PM I wasnt sure on the heads. I'll have to look threw everything I have.
4320Diesel 03-29-2010, 08:57 PM i knew i forgot something lol. also the 6.5 heads had bigger precups. S code(emissions) had smaller ones i think and the F code(non emissions heavy duty) had bigger ones that were harder on fuel but made a hint more power.
dazedandconfused 03-29-2010, 09:01 PM Which block was stronger? I didnt have time to look at the 6.2 when I unloaded it today.

redblock 6.2's were said to be the strongest because of higher nickel content in them. the 599 blocks were said to be strong too but they dont seem too much better than the 660 black blocks.
randomid25 03-30-2010, 01:08 AM some 6.5's have anodized piston tops. Supposed to help it tolerate higher egts but IDK how well that works.
4320Diesel 03-30-2010, 09:17 AM that was what i forgot!

6.2s came with the serp setup too Brent, in NBS trucks.
Diaric 03-30-2010, 10:37 AM and short injectors
turbonator 03-30-2010, 10:40 AM Are you taking notes on all this Brent.....:D
you know that exams are coming ..... and at seeding time.
Don't want to be held back a year ......again.LOL:eek:

Not sure about the accuracy of wikipedia on these engines. The HP/TQ numbers sound right but The numbers i have for the bore and stroke are as follows: 101mm x 97mm on the 6.2L, 103mm x 97mm on the 6.5L

Same numbers he gave..... yours are just in metric....... :thumb:
dazedandconfused 03-30-2010, 05:19 PM Okay guys I appreciate it. Are the heads on the later 6.2s the same as the 6.5's? Also were are the casting numbers and such located on the 6.2's? I'm going to hoist mine up and see if I can get the numbers off of it.
4320Diesel 03-30-2010, 09:57 PM diaric i already quoted the short injectors lol. and yea i know trios my bad i forgot to add it.
Diaric 03-30-2010, 10:04 PM no brent, i was adding to what trios said that 6.2 had serp . they also had short injectors in vans and all from 88 up, so its not really a difference
dazedandconfused 03-30-2010, 10:07 PM This motor was suppose to have came out of a 88 van. I'm wanting to put it in my 82 dually and restore the truck from teh ground up.
