: Im instaling a iPad as my main vehicle head unit.
chevypas 03-28-2010, 02:44 PM I had it with my avic-d2, its so useless, slow and outdated its not even funny. Im putting a 3G enabled iPad. Ii will occupy the entire space where the main radio is, the hvac controls , the vent and the cubby hole.
The Hvac will be relocated in the glove box.
A simple din radio will be installed and drive the speakers, with a aux. input from the ipad.
The vent will be cancelled.
Im unsure of the mounting system yet, probably will want it easily detachable yet clean.
The budget will be under 1000$
Toughts?
carter_44 03-28-2010, 02:55 PM i want to see pictures
jstroke 03-28-2010, 04:11 PM That sounds challenging yet quite unique. Definitely keep us posted!
nekkidhillbilly 03-28-2010, 04:54 PM sounds like a bad idea just do a carputer that way to dont have to hack up the dash
couldbefun 03-28-2010, 05:02 PM x2 on pics.....def wanna see it
BombDocDiesel 03-28-2010, 05:03 PM I want to see this. Where are you planning to install the DIN radio?

The head unit might go under the cup holders or the glove box where i could still access everything. The cables would have to be extended.
I will then be able to cancel my XM subscription and stream from the ipad or just listen to my music, the ipod interface on the avic is laughable at best.
Cant wait to use maps with a assisted GPS and a 10" multitoutch display.

YoKev 03-29-2010, 05:32 AM Would I be out of line to ask what the heck an iPad is?
chevypas 03-29-2010, 10:34 AM The ipad is he new product being realesed by apple this saturday, its basicly a 10" iphone with a multitoutch interface (multitouch is a techology that interpret finger gestures such as pinch to zoom and double tap to fit screen ect.)
His product will change the way peaple use computers because the interface is slick easy to use and the thing is superfast.
I checked the carputers but hose dont interest me, windows is not made for a small screen wheras the ipad is built for that. This will be extremely usefull to keep my buisness organized by haveing acess to all my information and maps acess with satalite view. This will blow anything comercially available solution out of the water.
I need the 3g version, thats commin out later so the project will be started early may, just need to figure out the mountin system.... I want it detachable so i could brin it inside the job if needed, this is gonna be sooooo cool!!!

there are mac versions of the carputer ppl have built
luv4thechevy 03-29-2010, 04:41 PM make sure u can detach it, dont want some punks to be walking by and notice a 10" screen!
couldbefun 03-29-2010, 05:11 PM how far are you from buffalo, Ny? My friend has a car audio shop there whith a fabricator who is second to none......I am sure he could design and make a mount that would do exactly what you want it to....pm me if your interested and I'll tell you his web site...
mmangels22 03-29-2010, 05:38 PM I am interested to see this, and if its possible to do.
chevypas 04-05-2010, 07:12 PM Ok guys looks like this is 100% do able, i have been fidleing with my ipad andd cant wait to get a 3g version to put in the truck.

Harvester 04-05-2010, 07:24 PM ok... That's tha future right there!
I look forward to seeing your pics. Good luck with the install.
carter_44 04-05-2010, 07:31 PM that is awesome. i want one. has to be easily detachable though. got your computer in your car then can grab it and go whenever you want.
wrockisland 04-07-2010, 09:32 AM I think I might be inclined to mount it on a pivot so you can use it at a 30 degree angle.
schuter 04-07-2010, 11:15 PM I hope the GPS on the IPad is better than the POS the IPhone uses.
wreedLBZ 04-07-2010, 11:25 PM I have a Ipad :)
mmangels22 04-07-2010, 11:35 PM Nice idea to integrate the iPad as a head unit, can't wait to see some more of the installs.
socal2ks 04-08-2010, 02:38 AM I was a skeptic of the ipad before it came out, but after playing with for an hour or so at the apple store I have changed my mind. Already have a macbook, macbook pro, and hackintosh :p:
Multitasking is going to be release tomorrow which means you should be able to run pandora, nav and a browser simultaneously.
I really like the idea of using the onkyo optical adapter along with the audison bit one, the only downside would be that your $1k budget has been shot to all hell.
Ill be looking forward to seeing this install.
luv4thechevy 04-08-2010, 04:24 AM I would have mounted it the opposite way horizontally so that the home button was closer to the driver, not the passenger, either way....still WAY BAD ASS
mtjasper 04-08-2010, 08:51 PM If it's anything like the iPod touch I'd be happy, Pandora radio would kick ass using that 3g.

wont work its wifi only unless you tether your phone and then you would need to jailbreak the iphone and ipad
mtjasper 04-11-2010, 06:55 PM wont work its wifi only unless you tether your phone and then you would need to jailbreak the iphone and ipad
Well that just kinda sucks don't it? :confuzeld
Brad92 04-11-2010, 07:08 PM Jailbreaking is easy. I don't know if they have iPad jailbreaks yet, or you can use the iPhone/iPod Touch jailbreaks? I love my jailbroken iPod Touch as I can download free music on it without a computer.
rodder55 04-11-2010, 10:17 PM i think the hp slate would be cooler personally
1TFROT 04-11-2010, 10:31 PM serious possible issue,
make sure the vent section is COMPLETELY blocked off or you will get tons of moisture build up. I have my tach built into one of the vent sections (in my s10) and didn't think about this until it was finished and saw it happen. it has not ruined the tach yet, but I need to fix it before it does.
just a thought

you would be better off though bluetooth or docking your iphone to a head unit. i have an iphone like it but this ipad is stupid.
nekkidhillbilly 04-12-2010, 12:13 PM i think the hp slate would be cooler personally
i agree
but a carputer would be better than either
howellt 08-04-2010, 04:12 PM so............what happened to this idea?

ExotixTransport 12-19-2010, 12:11 AM Did that back in 04... Mind you not with an Ipad !!!
With a 15 inch laptop monitor
I will dig up the pics if not take one sometime this week
cynergy 12-19-2010, 02:58 AM Here is what i would do,
Custom make an aluminum holder for ipad to mount or hold during operation. mount single DIN in pocket below, move HVAC to pocket above the single din. and make custom aluminum trim rings for that area. all wiring and power to ipad can be hidden behind the ipad "holder". The holder would have to be made in two parts, with a backing plate the mounts to the original dash mounts, and then a cover ring to hold it in. With some tinkering it could be done so that removal of the ipad was easy and hassle free, i personally would go for a pressure fit system or a magnet that held the ipad firmly in place but if you pressed in the lower corner for example it would release the ipad from the holder. think of a golf divot tool with a ball marker. dont know if you know what they look like or not, but there is a magnet that holds the ball marker in place, and when you press on the lower edge of the ball marker it releases from the divot tool. should be a straight forward installation as far as wiring goes, need and inverter to keep ipad charged, and the necessary connections for the speakers.
show some pics when you get er done, cause that is a pretty cool idea.

I think I just had a nerdgasm.
Wow!
I wonder how many times you'd get pulled over when a cop sees you touching it while driving - it's probaby a little fuzzy so far as the laws go, I suspect you'd have to be really careful how much you use it while driving, and what's playing/displaying on the screen. Put a video on there while you're going down the road and I'm sure that's good for a ticket of some sort. :D

I wouldn't think it would apply to the new law(handsfree devices only) here, it is the same as a touch screen nav from the factory, just a bit bigger!
Watching a movie though, that will get you a ticket in Ontario!
PrivatePilot 12-19-2010, 12:51 PM it is the same as a touch screen nav from the factory, just a bit bigger!
Well, technically, you're not even supposed to touch or access a nav device while driving either, factory or not.
The law is fuzzy in many regards though as you CAN still adjust your radio or factory controls (HVAC, etc), so I suppose you could say that the iPad is an extension of your radio so long as it's in iPod mode...although I suppose if push came to shove in court the cop could say it wasn't part of the factory stereo, therefore not included in this exemption.

When I say nav, I don't mean the actual navigation, I mean the radio portion of the touchscreen....it would be the same as that.
ExotixTransport 12-21-2010, 09:18 AM I might do this in my tow truck... I might also get rid of my gauge cluster tho... As OBDII Will interface with the Ipad !!
Hmmmmmm just gotta wait for the warmer weather LOL

I looked at the PLX stuff
Figured I would only need
Boost
EGT
Intake Air Temp
Sensors as the rest should carry over with dashcommand !!
Might go one further and do a budget 5.1 surround system while I am at it
Since my dash doesn't have the air bag switch and just a heater vent tho I might go ahead and delete the heater vent and not screw with the cluster surround, the more stock presentation the better imo
