: Rentatune: Would there be enough interest?
McRat 06-28-2005, 09:36 PM A common question on these boards is what does a specific tuner do.
Would "renting" a tuner be a suitable endeavor?
Say $20 for a week?
Just curious.
Max Power 06-28-2005, 09:40 PM I'd be interested.
mahalkita 06-28-2005, 10:01 PM Me too! Are different types available?
It don't sound bad, but there might be to many idiots out there to rent tuners to. Like the dude who don't read directions and fries his ecm or something. Then he gets pissed and trashes your programmer. Or the nice fellas at UPS destroy your programmer playing football with it. I'll stick with loaning it to my buddies. They like it and I buy the darn things anyway!! Now if they would just buy some different ones so I can try theirs this would work great!! could I be on to something.... A Programmer Swap! That could be the ticket.
mwgasman 06-28-2005, 10:21 PM I'm in. Infact I'll start, I'd like to try the PPE for the LLY:D . I'm thinking of buying it, but $879 is a little steep for 30 more horses.
yamahagrizzly 06-28-2005, 10:24 PM i like the sound of that! rent a tuner! lol
i would deff be interested! and oviously their would be some kind of contract saying if you damage it you have to buy it! and most people on this site got the comon sence to call and or post a problem if the dont figuare it out!
motojay 06-28-2005, 10:26 PM I would be interested...
Easy enough to cover yourself also. Start with a metal case and custom foam for shipping. (Pistol case would be perfect.)
Then it goes like this:
I send you the full value of the tuner. You send me the tuner. I use the tuner for a week. I send you back the tuner. You send me the full value of the tuner, less $20.
Then you have a stern "you break it, you bought it" policy.
I would say $20 would be too cheap. I would pay twice that, plus shipping.
Jay
GMC2500HD 06-28-2005, 10:31 PM I think it would be an excellent idea.. You will need to structure it with the "I am not responsible for you breaking your truck legal stuff," but other than that I think you would be able to make a few coins on it...Also the usual disclaimer of anything that is wrong with your truck after removal at any and all later dates is not your responsibility as well....
sp33d 06-28-2005, 10:44 PM Interesting thought... I've got about 14 you could use for the biz :)
Hotrodstan55 06-28-2005, 10:45 PM You could do like I do with tools, if someone borrows it I ask for the price of the tool as a deposit. Haven't lost a tool yet, they always come home for a refund, if not I can buy another.
Dmax Tim 06-28-2005, 10:45 PM Pat just wants to make some $$$$$$$ off all the programmers he has laying around ):h
My guess is he's (Kat really) building a downpayment for a new Z06 :ro)
partsguy662 06-28-2005, 10:46 PM That is a good idea...
Just don't expand the idea to "rent a wife" ):h
The new Z06 rocks...I'll rent that!!!
Max Power 06-28-2005, 10:51 PM $20 is too cheap. $50 minimum.
McRat 06-28-2005, 11:06 PM Yeah, the liability is high. A "lost" tuner would wreck the system.
Perhaps the model should be more like a blood bank. We pool together our tuners, take 100% deposit on CC (I have CC equipment) and you create credit when you lend out a tuner to someone, so you can test other tuners.
Your credit for lending a tuner is another tuner.
To tell you the truth, I have:
2 PPE's
1 PPE Harness box
1 VA
2 Predators
1 Edge EZ
The rest I either sold, borrowed, or returned.
It would be great if a VENDOR would step up and try this. They could get the tuners cheaper.
As I do the math, if I had to buy tuners, I'd probably lose money. But it's still a GREAT idea IMO. Coming from someone who has run about a dozen tuners, each one has it's own strengths and weaknesses.
Blood Bank?
GTA23109a 06-28-2005, 11:37 PM Good idea, but like someone already said, you'd need to get full replacement cost of the tuner/box paid in full up front. Then when the item is returned in proper condition, refund the difference minus rental fees and shipping. You'd also need to set up a payment system OTHER than Paypal . . . it's too easy to jerk people around with that deal. Pelican cases make awesome shipping crates also and the smaller ones aren't too expensive.
I also think $50 would be doable, or, better yet, base the rental off of the item's price. Between, say, 7% and 10% of whatever the venders are getting for it. Make rentals time-based (say 30 days?? ) and if the item isn't returned in that time period, the deposit is forfeit.
Certainly a great idea, but I think a smart vendor would be in the best position to start something like this as well as having the most to gain!!
DSTRBD 06-28-2005, 11:38 PM Pat- Give me a call in the A.M. and maybe we can get something going. I think it would be a great idea for those who are on the fence trying to decide which box to get. If there is enough interest, I would be willing to set it up.
Max Power 06-28-2005, 11:43 PM Best bet is for a dealer to handle it that is for sure. That way he can also offer to waive the $50, pay full price and don't bother sending it back.
rolloffhill 06-28-2005, 11:49 PM Best bet is for a dealer to handle it that is for sure. That way he can also offer to waive the $50, pay full price and don't bother sending it back.
:exactly: what I was thinking.
mahalkita 06-29-2005, 12:52 AM $20 is too cheap. $50 minimum.
Is that for a programmer or a wife?):h
Just don't expand the idea to "rent a wife" ):h
 Well I know that's a joke. He would have to pay someone to take me
I'm high maintenance
I like Dmax Tim thinking :exactly:
Fingers 06-29-2005, 06:03 AM Rental time has to be much shorter to be feasable. Considering tuners seem to get updated one or more times a year, A $400 tuner would have to rent out at least 10 times to cover costs.
I would think one week of in hand time and have the tuner shipped with the return label included to expidite the return trip. Unit's buy out price could be reduced a little each time it is rented to help clear out older tuners.
HoustonDMax 06-29-2005, 08:24 AM Since DSTRBD is just around the corner from me, I think this is an excellent idea!!!!!!!!!!!
Dmax Tim 06-29-2005, 05:27 PM Is that for a programmer or a wife?):h
Both, take your pick
$50/ea, 2 for $75
coyotekid 06-30-2005, 12:43 AM I'd definitely be interested in this deal. I'm in!
Duratys 07-24-2005, 12:43 PM What ever became of this?
IRA51 07-24-2005, 02:25 PM SO THIS MEANS NO WIFES FOR RENT?:offtopic:
