Hey Gang,
The paperclip method for reading codes gives me a headache. What reader is recomended for a guy like me, that needs codes read and cleared. I would only use if for this 1994 K2500 6.5 turbo diesel, so I don't want to spend a fortune, but do want something that works when needed, on an infrequent basis.

Thanks!

Harbor freight sells some cheap units,,, Autozone does it for free,, I prefer the paperclip method,, it's free,, I have some patience, and I don't have to drive 12 miles to the zone to have it done for free.

Thanks for the suggestions, but I can't find an OBD I reader on Harbor Freight's web site. Do you have a link. My local Auto Zone only has OBD II code readers ;(

I have an Actron OBD II reader already...

Develop a bit more patience and use the paper clip. It's free, easy and fast. Clearing codes is easy too. Hold the brake while pressing and releasing the throttle pedal 5 times.
If you don't have enough patience for that, you should not own a 6.5.

X2 of what Ted said.

Define "spend a fortune"? Free, no way.

There is 1 Actron models that can do OBD-I with an optional cable. If you have those, then you are set. If not, it is going to set you back at least around $150 to $200.

IIRC, HF has one that can read OBD-I. It is just reading the blinking light. I am not sure if they are still selling those.

Another option is if you can buy the ALDL cable for OBD-I, you can always download the free version GMTDScanTech. That is probably your best economical option.

If you have an O'Reilly's they will let you take home a reader for free (you pay for it and then get a full refund when you bring it back). I didn't see where you are, but if you are around Kansas City let me know, I've got a scanner / code reader with cables for both OMB I and OMB II.

better yet,, get the GMTD scantech basic,, and get a ALDL cable for under 60bucks, and then you'll have your own scanner,, If you have a laptop that is!

Autozone uses a device that looks like a key. They get hundreds of them in. Every time I go in to get the GM OBD I computer read, I ask if I can have one of them. I think I got a drawer full with about 10 or 15 in there.

the key looking device is the same as a paperclip. its used as a jumper for the two ports
