I have a 2004 GMC with a non bose (I have a bench seat) cd/tape player. Was a 6-disc non bose radio offered? Are they very common? I assume it would swap right in?
Another thought. Does GM make a cd changer that is controlled through the factory radio/steering wheel controls?

Nope, cant get the 6-disc head unit (RPO code UC6) without the Bose system. Technically, you COULD get a UC6 to work with a non-Bose system, but you would have to reprogram the radio using GM's TIS programming service. And for that you need a TIS subscription and a Tech II tool. SO basically it'd have to be done at the dealer...and they most likely wont do it for you because they think it "wont work" just becuase its not a standard GM procedure (and plus, we're the customers, what do we know!! We're all just dummies compared to them!). But physically, it WILL work if you have a dealer that will listen to you. I think there is a guy over on the GM Trucks forum that got it to work. Otherwise, your other option is to buy a remote CD changer. GM makes two models. One is the model that is used in Denali's and Escalades (its like an in-dash unit, u just slide the CDs in one at a time) and the other model is a box that is meant to mount under a seat or something and holds 6 CDs in a magazine. Both will work with the current radio you have in your truck now and they both are controlled by either the steering wheel controls or the head unit itself.

Huh, that is interesting. Where would the in dash one mount? In the center console (I have a bench seat)?
