: Brand new LLY owner - almost..
hotncold 06-28-2005, 08:48 AM Hello all - This is my first post - however i've been reading the forums since looking into getting a diesel. I have to say that this site is a tremendous help to us new guys... I currently have a 04 V10 Ford - the gas mileage is killing me. I dont haul a bunch of stuff - just a 20' bass boat and a small cargo trailer - sometimes. I basically will just use this as a daily driver. I am picking up my 05 CC 4X4 LT on this thursday. I have to upgrade all my vehicles, I know its a sickness and thank goodness I have it:) . I need help deciding if the things i have chosen for my upgrades are a wise choice. Edge juice w/ attitude, MBRP XP stainless kitty back and AFE stage 1 intake. I dont plan on making any trans upgrades if i dont absolutely need to. I just want some more than stock. Is there a setting that i should not go above with the juice ? I will prob not use the higher settings unless beating on some imports. Once again - this is a very informative site and thanks for all the input in advance.
Markinem 06-28-2005, 09:17 AM Man you're gonna love it. Mine is bone stock and it's orgasmic. I can't wait for some mild mods as you described for mine. I can't even imagine.....:ro)
get a gasser, less hassles for what you want to do.
Cougar281 06-28-2005, 09:37 AM get a gasser, less hassles for what you want to do.
I, for one, would NEVER buy another gas truck again, EVER.
Markinem 06-28-2005, 09:57 AM This is hands down the best vehicle I have ever owned. The comfort, capability, power and economy are unsurpassed. 7000 miles, zero problems. 15.4 mpg towing my 20' Bayliner, 18 mpg empty both at 72 mph. It hardly notices the 4500 lbs behind it. Fantastic. I feel like I have found the best of all worlds. Gassers just can't compete with a Duramax/Allison in any category.
hotncold 06-28-2005, 10:04 PM I am getting 8-9 mpg with the v10 - thats the reason for the dmaxx - I cant wait to get her home - Hopefully with the mods i listed i wont get tired of her like i did with the V10 ford..
sdeines 06-28-2005, 10:19 PM Welcome to the club. You're gonna love it. I too run the Juice/Attitude and am happy to run most of the time on setting 1. I have improved my mileage about 1 to 1 1/2 mpg and since mine too is a daily driver empty the power increase is plenty for me. My concern was mpg and not to cause any damage to the tranny. Weekends I pull a 4000 lb cargo and switch to program 2. Haven't checked mileage yet on this one, but I'm sure it is as good as stock and more power. Regarding the AFE I would go with the Proguard as it will keep things cleaner. These diesels can suck a lot right past the filter. For now I'm running the Amsoil filter until I can afford the AFE Stage II Proguard. Still running stock exhaust and haven't seen EGT's over 1100. As you can see I own both diesel and gas and no doubt the gasser would be the first to go. Have fun........:welcome:
hotncold 06-29-2005, 07:52 AM Sdeines, thanks for the welcome. I will get the proguard then - if it will work better. It is kinda reassuring to get a reply from someone who has the same upgrades that im looking into - there are a ton of them out there - and i dont wanna mess this up - If this truck is half as good as the people say it is - it looks like she's gonna be a keeper....What can i expect for MPG with the diesel before break in and after. I see that people mention dealer updating software - should this be something i should have them do before i pick her up tomorrow or friday. Thanks for the help. At this point im still a diesel dummy.
Drillchart 06-29-2005, 08:01 AM As far as gass mileage is concerned there is a few topics already on that. I have had my truck for about 2 weeks and I have had two full tanks of fuel. First tank with a good mix of highway and back roads was 15.5, second tank of fuel mostly back roads very little highway was just shy of 16. This will depend greatly on your driving style. From what I've read so far it sounds as though you won't see significant increases in mileage until some where after 12,000 miles.
As far as the update I didn't even think to ask about it when I bought it so I will be interested to see what others say. Good luck with your new truck and enjoy.
hotncold 06-29-2005, 06:17 PM Thanks Drillchart - I wa averaging a little over 9 highway with the old gas pig..im sure this maxx will be a blast to own..
BLUEHERON 06-29-2005, 09:14 PM Without tranny upgrades, Edge recommends staying out of Levels 4+5. I have found 1-3 to be sufficient power increases. Of course, I did check out 4+5 to see what they were like and, wow. But, like you, I don't intend on any major league mods. I've had my Juice/Attitude for about 3 months and it is fun to mess around with. According to others much more hip to this stuff than me, it's about the best bang for your buck. I especially like the monitor to keep an eye on EGT's as well as other functions. As for exhaust and intake, others can chime in, but I'd say those are definite must-haves with a chip.

My mileage has been the same from day one as it is now at 15,000. Real world 14-15 city and figure 17-18-19 highway unloaded. Lower speeds really help, past 70mph you mpg is on a downward curve for sure.
Towing 5k I can get 15-16 70mph cruise, 13-14 dogging it 80-85.;)
Don't worry about the mpg's thats really just a bonus on top of the quality and capabilities of the truck. You will see, I can hardly tell when my 23' boat is back there.
Oh, by the way, this is my first diesel and the end of gas powered trucks ever for me. This truck shames my 2004 Quad Cab Hemi that I traded in for her.:ro)
Let me repeat...... SHAMES!!!!!!
Enjoy!

Markinem 06-29-2005, 09:40 PM :exactly:
sdeines 06-29-2005, 11:05 PM My mileage of course varies. My work commute empty is 42 miles round trip mostly 2 lane highway, with some stop and go and I averaged 18 to 19 mpg before the Juice. My first 2 tanks after the Juice have both been 19.9 mpg. I take it pretty easy never over 70 mph. I twice got 21 mpg on identical trips into the mountains of Colorado before the Juice. Speed never got over 65 so it does appear that lower speed = better mpg. I'm and old guy and not in any hurry and am meticulous about figuring mpg. There is NEVER any doubt as to my mpg being correct. I never have used the DIC. I also am running Amsoil synthetic in the engine and am pleased thus far. I also use Stanadyne additive on a regular basis.
Enjoy :grd:
TxChristopher 06-29-2005, 11:20 PM Yup. MPG's jump up pretty good going 65 instead of 70. If you can tolerate going that slow!
