: 6.2 into a '89 1-ton gasser?

Ok I've got a '89 1 ton dually with a 454/turbo 400 and I love it. It's from TX so it's rust free. It can pull a house but only gas stationhttp://images.intellitxt.com/ast/adTypes/2_bing.gif (http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/showthread.php?p=3777296#) to gas station. Which really sucks. It's my daily driver and getting 8-9 mpg. On a good day. So I've been wanting to swap in a diesel. A couple of friends have them and I'm hooked!

I've read about the 6.2/6.5 and was needing to be schooled on them. Is it a bolt in? Can I use my trans? I'm new to the diesel game so all my questions may seem stupid but so am I. It will continue to be a daily driver as well as towing my Blazer to go wheeling. I love this truckhttp://images.intellitxt.com/ast/adTypes/2_bing.gif (http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/showthread.php?p=3777296#) but I'm really sick of the mileage. I really can't enjoy it the way it is.

I asked this in the 6.5 section too. Like I said I don't know a thing so I'm asking everybody.

Okay, here goes.

The 6.2 is a bolt-in for a small or big block Chevy. It's a completely bolt-in replacement.

The Turbo 400 will bolt right up to the 6.2. You will need a new torque converter for a diesel and a diesel governor for it, however.

The wiring for the 6.2 is very simple; 12v that went to the distributor, goes to the injection pump shutoff solenoid. Put 12v to the two temperature switches in the passenger head, and take from the other side of those switches to a) injection pump high idle and cold advance, and b) glow plug relay. 12v from battery to starter, from alt to starter. The plug for your gasser alternator should plug into the diesel alt and work flawlessly.

There's a few other things that I'm sure I'm forgetting, if you go for this swap make another thread on here with specific issues/questions and the folks here will be more than capable of answering them. Just don't listen to 4320diesel, he'll blow up your chimney. Don't have a chimney? He'll find a way.

*EDIT: Just for your information, you should likely see 16-18 MPG with a 6.2 N/A on a 1 ton dually. I'd love to tell you what kind of mileage I get, but my injection pump leaks like a damn sieve so I can't get an accurate reading.

If you do this just keep in mind that a 6.2/6.5 won't have anywhere near the power of that 454.....

if you want something better for towing, you'll need something turbo'd. it will be better, but not a 454. you'll also need a TPS on the IP for vacuum to control the modulator on the th400

I don't tow all the time. I've seen people turbo the 6.2 how easy/worth it is it?

I would go with the 6.5. I like the 6.2 but for towing the 6.5 has the turbo. unless you swap 6.5 stuff on the 6.2 but just finding a 6.5 would save you time, instead of turbo charging a 6.2.
