: A little stiff taking it out of park
CrumBrosInc 06-27-2005, 07:42 PM I just drove my first diesel home. 2002 4WD Crew. 130k Everything seems to be pretty got but I noticed that taking it out of park and putting it into gear isn't as smooth as my gasser I am selling. Since this is my first diesel I didn't know if that was normal or not.
Speedstertwin 06-27-2005, 07:45 PM I bet this gets moved but mine does the same thing.
CrumBrosInc 06-27-2005, 07:51 PM I just joined this week and I didn't know where to post it. I looked around before I did it but didn't see anything that stood out to me. Also, I did a vin check before I bought it and the injectors have never been replaced and it hasn't had anything replaced in 130k. The guy I bought it from has had every maintanance item done as scheduled. Should I consider myself lucky or do all the injectors need to be replaced sometime or another?
Speedstertwin 06-27-2005, 08:08 PM Reading here makes you think that the injectors are time bombs waiting to go but I have 35000 on mine and I have no problems. I dont even know anyone who has. You only hear about problems on here. You probably just have good injectors since they have been OK for so long.
Bowtie Boy 06-27-2005, 08:11 PM Try setting your emergency brake before you put it in park and releasing it after you have your foot on the brake. It is called torque lock when the park pawl is holding all the weight of the truck from moving, when you try to release it usually it will be stiff especially on an incline. Hope this helps.
CrumBrosInc 06-27-2005, 08:29 PM Thank you for the advise.
Speedstertwin 06-27-2005, 08:43 PM This is different, it feels as though its in the mechanism rather than vehicle weight on the pawl.
It is normal...when I went from my 03' 6.0 gasser to this 05 I thought something was broke....it is fine.

Well I thought I was lucky but my injectors went last thurs. My truck was covered under the special policy adjustment.
If yours go the same as mine, (with alot of diesel in the crankcase, loss of power) you should be covered. Your VIN falls within the policy vin breaks

Mike L. 06-27-2005, 10:35 PM The Allison rating on the parking pall is 19,000 ib. This is going to make a noise going in and out because the mechanism is massive. Do not worry. The Allison 1000 series transmission ratings are judged by their parking mechanism holding power, not the internal parts. Anything beyond 19,000lb gets a parking brake on the back of the trans instead of a parking pall mechanism.

CrumBrosInc 06-28-2005, 01:07 AM I had read something about that. That makes me feel so much better and I can't tell you how excited I am about hooking up to my toy hauler and pulling that sucker up the biggest pulls I can find and then smiling when I check my gas mileage. I am tired of my 6-7 mpg with my 6.0. Thanks Mike!
Machinator 06-28-2005, 08:06 AM The pull out of park force is a little higher for the Allison then the Hydramatics by design. But if you're straining to pull it out, especially if it's on an incline, then something may be wrong.
cit1991 06-28-2005, 02:00 PM I have an inclined driveway. To save on gear wear, I do the following when parking on any incline, loaded or not:
1. Stop
2. While holding the brake, set the parking brake
3. Shift to neutral
4. Release the brakes (slowly) and make sure the parking brake holds.
5, Allow the truck to settle back against the parking brake.
6. Select park on the trans.
This way the parking brake holds the weight, not the gears and park prawl (but there ready as a backup). If there is any concern about traction to hold the load still, park it in 4H.
When starting back up again:
1. Depress brakes.
2. Select drive or reverse on the trans.
3. Release parking brake, and drive off.
This little procedure (which becomes habit after a few times), is better on the trans and diff, safer (cuz you know the parking brake holds, and Park is a backup), and eliminates the hard shift out of park.
CrumBrosInc 06-28-2005, 05:05 PM It isn't terribley stiff I just noticed a difference from my gasser so I thought I would see if that was normal. From what I am hearing I don't have a problem. Thanks for everybodies input.
smoop 06-28-2005, 05:23 PM The important question is: Is it stiff when you put it in?
Park, that is.
Smoop;)

Not anymore.:help:
DURAtotheMAX 07-01-2005, 01:16 AM I have gotten used to it...but its kinda funny getting in my dad's Tahoe from time to time. Im used to shifting with so much more effort for my big Allison that when I shift his little 4L60-E, my hand flies all the way down to 1 becuse it shifts so "effortlessly"!!

Machinator 07-01-2005, 07:26 AM One thing to keep in mind is that the Allison park pawl is designed to hold 26,000 pounds on a 30% grade and still allow you to pull it out of Park. So a little extra force can be expected.
CrumBrosInc 07-07-2005, 01:40 AM I know this is off topic but I have to just say that I love my new truck. It has 120k on it but it is new to me. I have only owned chevy's but this is my first diesel. I took it to Lake Powell for the 4th and didn't listen to the radio the whole time. The sound of the engine was music to my ears. I am a complete convert to diesel's and to top it all off, I got 24mpg on 265's. I think I found a great truck that was maticulously maintained. I will wear my "diesel.com" shirt with pride. Cheers to the Duramax and Allison tranny!
Badhara 07-15-2005, 09:40 AM Mine is brand new and does it too. Must be an undocumented feature...
