I just bought a 2006 Duramax with Stock polished aluminum rims. There is some areas of the rims that look nasty because there used to be wheel weights at tose locations at one time. I tried to buff these areas out with a buffing wheel and white rouge compound. It did not even touch this area. It almost looks like there is a clear coating on these rims? Is there a clear coating over the aluminum? Thanks for the help

Yes, there is a acrylic type clear coat on these rims from the factory. My 08 stock aluminum rims are doing what I call de-laminating--clear coat peeling off. I am currently working with the dealer to replace all four under warranty.

Mine are peeling real bad also, thats why they make good winter wheels.

I know aircraft paint stripper will take this clear plastic off the rims and then the white and jewelry rouge will make them look like chrome. It did on motorcycle primary covers anyway. Thanks for the feedback
I would not recommend this as it is a PIA to keep the aluminum up after you strip this clear coat off.
